That's the deflection yoke. You will need to replace it.
A schematic will be needed to look up the replacement part number for it. Shouldn't be too hard to find a correct replacement for it.

Thanks Bill. Do you know if this piece actually insulated the pieces, or was it meant hold them in correct orientation?

If any body on the board has a schematic for the RA 170, or knows where to find one, I'd be terribly grateful.

Turns out I was just really lucky! But now I have some work to do to get this honey back on her feet.

The plastic pieces that rotted, and, dis-intergrated both insulated, and, held it together.
You will need a new yoke of the correct type.

If nothing else is wrong with the yoke, just rebuild the cover.

It appears as though everything else was just fine. I only carefully picked the brittle celluloid from between the magnets and copper windings. If only I could get Sterling Halloway to come fix it.

Didn't notice if anyone warned you yet but there are some VERY high voltages on TV sets. First priority is to learn where they are, then learn how to discharge the CRT before you go poking around in there. These voltages can hurt or even kill you.

Sounds like you're getting addicted though. It starts out with an innocent set and then they multiply..... :D :

Yeah, I started thinking about that as I was poking at the celluloid. My other thought was "gee, I hope this isn't the stuff that keeps the CRT from imploding"

And I thought I was rockin' it old school with my 1992 Samsung 27" CRT TV!

Repeat after me, "I can repair TV sets, I can repair TV sets..."

The least I would do if I were you would be:
1) Learn how to discharge the CRT.
2) After you do that pull the chassis and take some photos of the underside so that you can post them here. It might be a very easy set to make dependable.

I actually found a video by a curb-side scrapper on how to discharge a CRT.

If there is anything he misses or is doing stupid, let me know.

I have been puzzling over this. The chassis is mounted on plywood that looks like it should pull straight out the back of the cabinet, but I haven't gotten under it to see how it detaches. I got distracted trying to figure out where the little flakes of brittle plastic were coming from.

The chassis is held in cabinet by bolts under the plywood board.
