Any ideas what the set is in this picture?

The screen is Trinitron square but there were no CRT's like that in 54, or am I just seeing a door and thinking it's a screen?

I think it's a door. Given its position in the room, I'd say it's not even a TV. Chairs facing away from it. Cool picture, though!

That is a record player, aka Hi Fi Set. Before "Stereos" ruled the world. It probably also had a radio, therefore radio/record player combination. In 54, should have FM instead of SW.

Probably an RCA. Betty was on an NBC show at the time, and RCA/NBC were tight...

Looks like a 1946 Zenith 12-H-094 radio/phonograph.
