It's not a Zenith, it's a Magnavox. Their quality had totally gone out the window by that time. I'd hate to try to source repair parts for it today. They typically catered to the crowd that wanted something different, and that cabinet certainly is. I'd bet that only a few of them were sold in that color which was way out of style by the early 70's.

Thanks for that good information. Here is the receipt documenting what the owner paid for it. Seems like a lot back then. Thought you may find the original cost interesting.

That doesn't surprise me for a Magnavox combination in that style of cabinet, as it had to be a very limited production. I would expect it to be very difficult to sell today at any price.

They got the deal clinched by offering 90 days same as cash, which wouldn't have cost the dealer anything unless they already owned the set in question. Or it could have been sold from showing the customer pictures in a catalog rather than actually having been on the sales floor.

No way of knowing that at this late date, but the "floor plan" offered by many distributors gave the retailer extended time to pay for sets which were put on display on their sales floor. Usually about the time it was paid for and the retailer had lots of money tied up in it, the salesmen would be offered a small bonus to quickly make it go away. Even in the early 70's I can't see a retail dealer taking a chance on putting one on the sales floor. Maybe in a darker finish, but not the provincial white.

Our local Magnavox dealer always had one on these on display but in a darker finish. I have seen a few come up on craigslist and one in an antique mall recently.

RCA and Sylvania also sold similar type armoire combos but in a more pleasing looking cabinet style. Only Magnavox could make something that hideous.

When we were married in 1971, the guy I worked for lined up a set of bedroom furniture for us in this style.
It was very cheap (all we could afford) and I wondered at the time why it WAS so cheap!
Obviously the retailer couldn't shift it off the floor.....
