We found another brand.

Translation; either too cheap to have 4 C cells on hand, or tried it and it doesn't work.

Thanks Jay---have plenty of volume & sound basically good, by "muddy" I mean a little "bassy garble"... Hard to describe---just not "clean"... Have to sample audio from detector onward with tracer when the "right" time comes around... Wonder if bias okay in P-P output---possible slight crossover distortion ? The radio does have an unusually low "noise floor" between stations---really quiet compared to most... And I agree about those 3-gang tuning caps---they peak my interest, also, as the tuned RF amp stage equipped sets are collection focus... Any more of them in your collection ? Sure enjoy seeing pics & reading about other's "projects"... Have seen pics of the Nanaola---its on the list... Wonder if it was was a "normal" U.S. import ? And I am also grateful for Steve's schematic posting---not much info on these sets on-line... A battery tube shouldn't be too hard to make---even thin cardboard rolled around batteries & glued should help...

And Fifties---think some might purposely not test so they don't have to admit they're non-working...

I would check the base bias resistors in the audio section as a cause of distortion. Check the speaker also, by plugging in another through the earphone jack.

AFA sellers testing, as I said, either too cheap to have a few flashlight batteries around, or they know it doesn't work. With a battery only tube set, OTOH, it's understandable that they wouldn't normally have a 45 or 67.5 volt battery in the house.

Found source of that slight audio distortion---weak batteries !!! Even though it played loud...

Sampled audio from detector at volume control with external amp & it was okay---at minimum... When turned up, noticed that distortion on both radio & amp---so monitored battery voltage & noticed it decreased when volume increased to point of noticeable distortion... Replaced batteries & now okay ! Glad it was that simple, but sure gave that "dumb" feeling !

Also have found a couple more names applied to "variants" of this chassis---Granada & Air Chief...

You can add ORITONE to the list of models. This is the case of the TR88X. The rest of it may be yet
found.

And just saw another, Pilot TR-800, an Ebay listing from Israel...

They got a lot of "mileage" from that chassis !

I believe Nanaou Radio Electrics first designed this radio as "NANAOLA" brand.
Nanaou had entered the subsidiary of Toshiba in 1957. That's why the radio uses many TOSHIBA transistors I think.

Well---Radio Shack also got into this game... Just saw a leather encased "Realistic TRF" version with this chassis on Ebay---was a "BIN" and went quick...

In this thread, no one posted a instruction sheet for one of this series. Today, while digging
out some data in another forum I came across the Selfix TR802 sheet in my files from back then.

Here's another version of the radio I picked up from an old closed hardware store in Great Falls, MT..It was still in the box with the original batteries. Its marketed under the Honeytone brand. No scratches, everything there as original. The only problem was the handle was cracked, I've noticed others had that problem. I glued it back together without any problems. It is sensitive and plays really loud..I can post a pic if anyone wants to see it...Alan

Since I've started indexing the Sam's TSM series, I've found lots of times where this radio
has been marketed under various trade names. Essentially, I have TSM-20 thru 58 completed.
When I get to #75 or so, I'll try to post the duplicates of this radio. Someone be sure to remind me.
