Does anyone have any information on this model Motorola? When I google the model number, nothing comes up - except when I take off the suffix (I suppose the color code?), then I get a few results. This is the only transistor in my collection and it doesn't work. Can someone tell me when it was made? I included a pic of the radio, the case is a burnt orange or pumpkin-pie color.

What is the model number? I may have some information.

Model 7X24S I think....

Made around 1959.

My dad was a Motorola dealer and I got one very much like yours for Christmas in 1958. I was 13 years old at the time. It was turqoise and had 6 transistors. I wish i still had it. I am not positive but i think it was USA. made. I think it is quite valuable. I saw one sell on ebay a few years ago for over $200.

Now that I think about it it had 7 transistors.

Great memories, Bill! I certainly paid much less for mine, thankfully. So, if you received yours in Christmas of '58, does that make it a '59 model? Since your father was a Motorola dealer, was this a top-of-the-line transistor model?

Does anyone know what the "S" suffix on the 7X24- model number stands for? Bob H posted a link for a 7X24W that was white, so I'll assume it's a color code. But this one is orange...?

I believe the letter at the end is a collor code but what S stands for I do not know. I remember the retail price on the radio when it was new was $59.99. In those days that was a lot. Bob

I do not have it any more. I tossed it out by the time I was 20. At the time it hd developed squealing noises and was in need of new caps. Bob

Update: The letter suffix is indeed the color code. The radiomuseum.org site lists the 7X24S = "Sun Tan" with a gold back.

Wow---almost 3 years have passed ! Did you get it re-capped ? If so, how's it working ? Have heard that these are good performers with the RF amp---and style is sure classic !

Hi, John...no, I didn't re-cap it yet. It's still just little more than a display piece. Been busy working on the cabinet of my eternal Atwater-Kent 145 project when I do have "radio time". Maybe someone else can comment knowledgeably about its performance? I was fooling around on the radiomuseum site, and was surprised that they now note the factory color for this radio...and I remembered my thread on the subject.

It's jet-age style is what attracted me to it in the first place. Motorola designed some great mid-century style radios in the mid-to-late '50s. This one is still my only collectible transistor radio (not including a single hybrid peanut tube/transistor Crosley book-radio).
