I have had this radio since it was new. I bought it at a local department store here in Ohio in 1984. I was wondering if anyone else has one and what it may be worth if I wanted to sell it

Welcome to the ARF forums :!:

Transistor radios from the eighties aren't really collectable yet. Only a few from that era get any attention.
If it's in 'new' condition and still in the box, you might get $20.

Here's some 'similar' radios on eBay that you can compare it to.
Keep in mind these are asking prices, not what they have sold for:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-GE-Gene ... 3cc8f407aa

Can you post a photo? That would help.

Can you show us a picture and describe what condition it is in?

Is it a boom box? If so, there is a market for those.

Contrary to Mitch's opinion, there were many collectible radios from the '80s, including many from General Electric itself.

That's a good performing radio! I had one of those World Monitor's for several years, but it had a planetary gear tuning problem that most of those developed when the white gear breaks and separates. Causes a "jump" when tuning it.

Very nice reception, and good sounding. I've seen them going for $150-200 in really nice shape. Not very common anymore, they rarely show up at radio swap meets.

Hi Ernie,

If you're not interested in selling it and are able to find what it sold for on eBay,
why ask the question to begin with? I tried to answer your question with the
limited amount of information you gave us, yet you immediately dismissed my response.

Unless it's a communications type receiver, adding shortwave doesn't do much towards it's value.

Hang around the forums for awhile and you'll see what makes a radio 'collectible'.

P.S. - Again, 1980's radios don't really command very high prices as a general rule. :D

You didn't say it was a World Monitor, Ernie. I didn't recognise it from the catalog number. I typed it in on Google after your original post and nothing came up. Weird.

I'm interested if you'll sell it here.

Well, this is what he said;

And I would agree with him; some radios from the eighties are collectible, but your assertion of "many" seems a stretch, and "many from General Electric"? Apart from the SR II, I can't think of any.

I am so sorry I did leave the A off the number! I didn't e bay search it because I want a true opinion of it's value! Just wanting info.
Mine does NOT have the gear problem. I very rarely use it as I use my DX 394 (with mods)and Tecsun PL660. I have an Halli S38 that I use also along with my Royal 1000d Mystery radio!

It does NOT say World Monitor on it anywhere! It is just a GE Short wave radio with that model number

It's still basically a World Monitor. Same era, same cabinet, same features, same knobs, same readouts, same handles.

Here's a World Monitor for sale, looks just like your radio:
http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/g ... -136384661

Zoom in on the picture, it doesn't say "World Monitor" on that radio, either.

My GE Superadio 1 doesn't say "Superadio" anywhere on the radio. But it's still a Superadio. I think it said so on the box it came in though, and it obviously was marketed as a Superadio. Maybe it was a GE habit to use a marketing name and forget to put it on the radio.

7-2990A NOT 7-2290
GE dropped the World Monitor badging by the time this radio came out. Just because somebody listed one on ebay by that name doesn't make them all called "World Monitor"

Made by Panasonic around the RF-2600 platform. I'd keep it.

Thanks for that info, MBird, much appreciated.

The reason I referred to it as a "World Monitor" is because every article or reference I've seen concerning this radio, including the review in the 1983 WRTH (where it's referred to as a "GE World Monitor II"), refers to this radio as World Monitor or World Monitor II.

It was also advertised as such in some department store catalogs of the time (including one I still have from 1986), hinting that GE must have pushed the newer model as a "World Monitor II". It seems to be a generic name for this radio, even if GE dropped the badge.

I remember seeing these radios in the stores. Looked like it would be a good performer. I nearly got one.
