I have a problem with 1960 RCA 1-TP-2E six transistor radio. The radio will not play on the internal speaker. But it will play well on a connected pair of headphones. Does the problem lay in the internal speaker or is it in the internal electronic circuit involving transistors or caps and two gang tunning shaft ? Thanks for any answers.
Tom
------------------
Hello!
Sounds like my kind of problem, one which won't require too many brains to figure out! If it plays well via headphones, but does not work through the speaker, then in all likelihood either the speaker itself is faulty, or the earphone jack needs attention.
Those little earphone jacks have spring contacts which are supposed to connect when the earphones are unplugged, allowing continuity through to the speaker. These often get tarnished and cruddy, or bent sufficiently over the years that the contact points fail to come together. A little cleaning and careful re-bending of the tiny contacts usually gets things going again.
Bad speakers are also fairly common, and if you have an ohmmeter handy, a quick check across its terminals will make for a speedy diagnosis. Most speakers read low (around five or six) ohms, and will "click" as you touch the meter leads to the contacts. If you have another speaker laying around, a quick clip-lead hookup will also prove if the speaker in the radio is faulty.
Good luck!
------------------
Win Kindel

Hi Tom
When you attach headphones contacts on the jack open to disconnect the speaker. When you remove the phones these contact are supposed to close. Adjust these contacts to close when the phones are removed.
------------------
Norm

Thanks to both of you. I will try the suggestions within the week and post a reply for what I found.
Tom
------------------
