This weekend I bought an sx62 complete with a spare "working" chassis, the chassis has been painted silver so there are no stamps I can see to indicate if it is a 62 or a 62 A.. what is the difference anyway, thanks in advance... This will be next up on the slab, any thing I need to be leary of on this one?

The audio output impedance on the SX-62 is 500 and 5000 ohms. For the SX-62A the AF output impedance is 3.2, 8, and 500 ohms. The first run of the SX-62 had the same tube lineup as the SX-42 with more locktal tubes than the later versions. The later versions substituted 6SG7's for the 7H7's and a 6J5 for the 7A4. The later versions of the SX-62 and all the SX-62A production had one locktal tube, the 7F8.

The 62A MK 2A had a fuse next to the transformer and had all the previous production changes.
The plain MK 2 had all the changes except the fuse.

On the bare chasis, it has the fuse right next to the transformer the transformer also has a tube receptacle on it that has what looks to be a pair of resistors.. the other set has a cover with the Hallicrafter's logo on it, That I havent looked beneath to see if it is set up the same..

Looks like the complete unit is a SX-62, and the chassis only, with its fuse and odd transformer is an "A". the transformer is a replacement, judging from the solder.
So after having read a bunch of posts on these and the SX42... :shock: I think I will clean this up a bit, take care of the rust, and put it on the shelf while I get a bit more experience with some more 38s, 40s and the like before I scare myself away from the hobby... this will give me time to wade through all the multitude of schematics..

Good idea, if you're new to the hobby. The SX62 can be an immensely rewarding restoration job, but it can also be one of the toughest dogs you can face. Been there and seen that with my own SX-62. The more experience you can bring to the bench when you tackle that unit, the better...

Yep, they can be intimidating as seen by the large number of SX-42/62 threads over the years on here.....and elsewhere.

Ive reached the point where I almost like working on them :?

While cleaning up the SX-62, DON'T use windex or alcohol on the glass dial! It will remove the lettering.

99% of the recapping is pretty straightfoward. It's the caps around that looong bandswitch that'll give you a run for your money. Especially the last switch wafer. IIRC, it's switching B+ and those caps involved with it must be renewed. I've had to change that wafer on a burned out switch....nothing scary mind you, it just made for a long night when doing it.

Great sound, when all peaked & tweaked it'll be one of the best bandcruisers you'll own.
