I had a chance to try out my new Telefunken E1501 receiver on 3885 this morning. It is a 10 Khz.-30 Mhz. receiver with a nice selection of mechanical filters. There was definitely a learning curve for me with a German manual and a panel labeled with graphic symbols. It has an aftermarket memory card installed which took some time to figure out how to use the read and write functions.

The Stancor 20P (P meaning portable) is a late 30s design running 20 watts input on AM. It came to me in excellent working order and I planned to put it on the air this morning but heavy QRN from lightning in the region made the Ranger/Desk KW a much better choice. I plan to have it on the air later this week once mother nature calms down.

Hey Rodger,

Very cool acquisitions. That Telefunken looks like it's built like a tank. How's the audio recovery on AM?

I look forward to hearing the Stancor 20P on the air soon!

Clark

Clark,

The AM audio from the Telefunken is very nice with an external speaker or phones, the internal speaker is fairly small and has poor low end response. I was able to use the 14 Khz. bandwidth for most stations this morning and switched to 6 Khz. when the noise became too strong. The SSB filters can be selected during AM but they are too sharp to comfortably receive AM except with SSB mode selected to provide a local carrier. These 200 Khz. mechanical filters have tighter skirts than the Collins mechanical filters I have used and trying to put the carrier slightly down the slope doesn't work with these. But they work fine for AM once SSB mode is selected to provide carrier reinsertion. This one has a pair of demodulator cards and does ISB but I haven't hooked up the extra audio output yet.

If conditions are decent this weekend I will check into the MWCRN with Stancor 20P. It came with a VFO adapter and I am driving it with my Millen VFO. I am not sure what crystal size it uses, they are larger than FT-243 but smaller than FT-171B crystals. There is a 60 mil filament lamp designed as an indicator/fuse to limit crystal current.

FB on the Stancor 20P Roger! Vintage amateur transmitters are very difficult to find in any condition and this one looks pretty good.
