Hi Guys,

Have a strange request (but then, the Ms says I am a strange person).

I have a much abused Swan 500 under restoration, and a Swan VX-2 VOX unit to mate with the transceiver. The instructions with the VOX unit claim the unit will allow CW "break in" operations if used with the Swan 500C, and that the earlier models (such as the Swan 500) can be modified so that the VX-2 will provide "break in" capability as well. The manual says to contact Swan for the details. I do not think this is still piossible.

I was wondering if any of the Hams out there have any knowledge of the modifications required (to the Swan 500) to allow the VX-2 to work CW "break in" with my Swan 500.

Hope this is in the correct forum. We do not seem to have a "modifing junk transceivers" forum.

Thanks for reading.

Dave

I am sure it can be done, but if no specifics arrive you might compare your 500 schematic with the 500C schematic and concentrate on connections to the VOX socket. I suspect something might be connected there on the 500C that was not there on the 500, but I don't have a 500 schematic to compare. I am curious about the parts connected to pin 5 that also connect to the keying line.

Here is 500C infornation including the schematic at the end. http://gmcotton.com/Ham_Radio/MISC%20Ma ... Manual.pdf

Dave,

The earlier Swan transceivers do not include a built-in sidetone for CW which is what is typically used to key the VOX circuit. I have the Swan modification instructions for adding CW sidetone to the 350 which is very similar to the early 500 and so if your 500 does not have sidetone adding that plus adding the line to feed sidetone audio to the VX-2 is probably what is needed.

Thanks Curtis and Rodger. I appreciate the input.

I downloaded the manual for the 500C. The differences are pretty obvious. Think I can modify my radio to the same configuration. Nice part is that I do not have to worry about destroying the value of the set - it has no value!

Had it on the air this morning (CW) and sounded good for a while, then the tone turned to a buzz and the keying became erratic. Obviously needs some TLC (and probably a few new parts). Will add it to my list of winter projects.

Thanks again

Dave

I have the VX-1 operating instructions with a schematic from Swan, Oceanside, California,
dated, 8-3-65, along with some modifications for models 400 and early 350's.

The VX-1 operating instructions are almost identical to the VX-2 in the link
posted by Eickerman.

Try posting your question to the Swan Users Group on Yahoo.
As I remeber the later VOX units use pin 5 for that function. The older VX1 did not use that pin. You might also look at the 500C on BAMA. It has the feature you are interested. The Yahoo and BAMA links are below.
Good Luck with your project.

I doubt VOX will add true break-in CW operation to that rig. The correct term is semi-break-in operation.

The turn around time will be too slow, even at the lowest drop time VOX setting.
