Recently acquired a 1940's Marconi CSR5 receiver with no power supply or speaker. Everything else is in tact. Is there anyone in this forum with CSR5 experience that I could exchange information with.
Many thanks.
Bob.

I've owned several and still have a CSR5 and CSR5A plus the documentation.

Ask away.

Hello Bruce, thank you for responding. I am ex RCN CPO, saw my first CSR5 in 1968 at a communications school, it was still being used along with a CM11 transmitter, but shortly after it was returned to surplus. It was one of those radio's that caught my attention and has ever since. Just acquired one, now looking into building a suitable power supply for it. I believe a 250 volt transformer through a suitable diode bridge, some capacitor filtering and current limiting may do the job. No idea when this unit was last powered up, I suspect a variac of sorts would be prudent. What was your approach with your receivers.

Cheers, Bob,
Vancouver Island.

Hi Bob,

I've had many ex-mil receivers over the years but have always liked the CSR5.

I had prior to moving to England two CM11s and four CSR5s. I restored one CM11 to operational condition and it wasn't that difficult, mostly caps. Same with the CSR5. Check a sample of resistor values to see if any are out of tolerance. Underneath the chassis at the rear is the antenna gas discharge tube (if it's still there). It's about 3" long and not needed.

Voltage needed is only 250VDC @ 115mA and 12VAC or DC @ 2.3A. I gradually applied voltage from a HV DC power supply (without filaments lit) and monitored current draw. I then lit the filaments and gradually applied HV again. Rig came to life and sounded great even after all these years. Power supply doesn't have to be regulated.

If you haven't already check out Jerry Proc's website on the CSR5
http://www.jproc.ca/marconi/csr5a.html

If you need docs send me a PM with your email addy.

BTW both my brother and father were ex-RCN

Bruce

I've never seen one of these before and must admit I'm impressed. I like the frequency coverage 70 kHz to 30 mHz and the half moon dial, similar to the R1155 is very attractive. I should imagine that with proper adjustment it would give a good account of itself in all modes.

I look forward to seeing some pics of the insides.

Bruce,

Thank you for the link to Jerry's CSR5 site, absolutely amazing, the photo of the RCN radio room equipment is outstanding. I am about to acquire the necessary parts for the 250vdc power supply shown on his site, it will take a while, I live 30 miles outside of Victoria here on Vancouver Island, parts shopping does not happen very often. I will keep you in the loop on my progress.
Cheers,
Bob.
