I friend living in the UK has a problem with a HRO-50 and a 50T-1 and asked me for help. It has been many, many years since I owned my 50T-1 and cannot remember how to access the dial scale bulbs,

Here is his question:

"The main problem I have right now is that the scale lamps are missing on both radios and I want to replace them; I can see the lamp-holders but it looks difficult to fit the lamps in them unless the radio is taken out of its cabinet. I assume one does this by removing all the control knobs and a few screws somewhere but I’m sure there must be an easier way. You’re the only guy I know who has experience of these postwar hollow-state HROs – any ideas?"

Any help would be appreciated.

Les,

Outside of pulling the panel from the chassis the other way to access these is to pull the drum that has the dial strips fitted to it (release tension pulley on the non-S meter side of the receiver then angle out the opposite end of the drum). Once the drum is out you have a little better access to the lamps and you can also now easily get to the screws (one per socket) that hold the sockets in place which can then be removed to make the change. Note that the S meter side has 2 screws but one is for the tension strip for the dial drive, the other holds the socket in place.

Room to use a piece of fuel line rubber hose? Slit the end a half inch or so...... Seems I heard a similar situation/solution from a friend recently.
