I followed this article to a tee, subbing em34 http://www.nostalgiaair.org/forums/Mess ... 028055.htmThe green wire, which is one of the wires that control the tuning eye degree doesn't go above 1 volt, im supposed to see 5-16v. I checked the ef89 tube which is what I believe feeds the green wire, I even subbed another tube. I'm receiving am and fm perfectly. I checked resistors coming off that pin, all in spec. There's a weird silver barrel, small, says 10/100 120volts, not sure if this is a cap. I'm lost at this point....is it cap that steps up voltage? The diagram I'm using shows an em84 tube, the model could have one or the other eyes. http://radiolamp.nl/images/schema's grundig/so126/so126 schema.jpg Thanks

The directions you linked to seem correct. I assume by "not working" you mean that the shadow is not changing. If it's not illuminating, that's a whole other discussion.
Some things that might get you on the right track: -the voltage that controls the shadow is negative. Do you mean -5 to -16? -this voltage comes from AVC circuit, which originates at the EABC80. If no negative voltage, look in circuitry in that area for problem, not EF89. -Are you sure the wire that previously was at pin 4 of the EM34 is now on pin 3 of the 6E5? -and, importantly... Are you using a traditional 6-pin U.S.-style 6E5 or are you using a russian-made 6E5C (or maybe called 6E5s) that has eight pins? If so, pin outs are totally different and the instructions you linked to are inapplicable.

...the 'silver barrel' is probably an electrolytic cap (does it have + or - markings on the ends?); the value suggests it's the electrolytic that you typically find in the FM detector stage (again, the EABC80 tube area)... ...btw, your link to the schematic was incomplete... http://radiolamp.nl/images/schema%27s%20grundig/so126/so126%20schema.jpg... ...are you sure you've got the right model? That schematic covers four models, SO 123/124/126/170, 1959-60 time frame, all miniature tubes, stereo (for tape/phono only) capability--and console-style. Too new for an EM34 eye tube (it calls for an EM 84, which is the blue-green 'bar' type rather than the round green 'eye'--and considerably easier to get than an EM34, from what I understand)...also, no 10µF 100/120V cap (referring back to your 'silver barrel') to be found anywhere on there...calls for a 4µF 70/80V in the FM detector (C41)...

Wrong back plate, its got a 132 backplate, the set is a so172. I have it figured out, ebf89 and ef89 were reversed. I had replaced a number of caps and resistors that were out of spec or shorted, did the can too. Sounds beautiful and tuning eye works great. Here's a pic of the set and tube layout for reference. New owner had no clue what tubes went where, nor did he have a manual or schematic. He has had the set in his basement for years and has never heard it play, I think he'll be happy.

...found the SO172 at Radiomuseum.org and looked at that schematic...that's more like it...

You must a member, my magnifying glass doesn't work so well with their postage stamp diagrams My handwritten one is wrong, the 2 farthest left tubes should be ecc83's.

Tell us about the CRT between the scope and the cap tester on the back of your bench.
