Is this cap too close to the output tube for safety? If it makes any difference, it's rated at 85 degrees C.

…and it didn't fix my low-level hum, either…

Yes, the life of the cap will be shortened with it mounted right next to the tube like that. It needs to be in the same physical position as original, or else moved under the chassis.

Best to always purchase 105 degree caps, they cost very little more than the 85 degree types, but even one of those wouldn't survive when mounted nearly touching a tube. Ideally you want to keep it a couple of inches away, unless it is mostly located below the tube like it was originally.

The ones in the brown striped jackets look like likely suspects, to me.

Ah, the ability to think out of the box…
The cap is already happily residing under the chassis now.
And I will get working on those other caps soon enough - just wanted to take care of the electrolytics first.

and the dirt and the wax capacitors. PCB chassis. got an Emerson with PCB chassis. modular component blocks. pretty cool design. simple. performs very well. probably exact same tube lineup. 12BE6 12BA6 35W4 etc.
