According to the alignment instructions for my Silvertone Model 1970A, after I get the IF aligned I am supposed to connect my signal generator to the antenna lead through a .00025uF (250pf) capacitor. All I have in my junk box is a .0005uF and a .0001uF. Will it make all that much of a difference if I use one of those? If not, which one would be better for me to use? Also, they want me to use a 400-ohm resistor instead of the capacitor for aligning the police and shortwave bands; all I have is 330-ohm. Again, will it make all that much of a difference?

I usually just lay the output cable of the S/G near the radio and pick up enough signal that way. You want to reduce the output of the S/G so you just barely hear the signal so that the AVC doesn't kick in, and it's easier to hear the peak that way.

Me too, Reece. Unless the radio has been severely messed with. The 'official' alignment procedures assume the worst case scenarios and sometimes are overkill for just tweaking out a working radio.
