I tried the phono forum for this but got nothing so here goes. Motorola 62F1. Got the radio up and running pretty good. Have not tried my hand at phonos yet but would like to get this one going. Cleaned and lubed all mechanical. all the mechanical works well. Expected the cartridge to be bad which it might be but when i touch the cartridge i get hum out of the speaker and when i rub my finger on the needle[ slide in needle with set screw] i hear it thru the speaker. Tone arm on the record and i get nothing. I would think if i could here my finger scratch i would here the record. This is the only 78 i have but i wouldnt think it would be the record. Cartridge has two numbers on it, I22 and740. Do i need to get another cartridge or do i have other issues? Eagerly awaiting some words of wisdom!

Most likely the cartridge. They fail in time. You may hear a little by rubbing your figner across the needle but not enough to pick up sound from a record. You don't have a lot of amplification in this radio. Need a cartridge with at least 1 volt output.

I've seen where a cartridge is bad, but rubbing on the needle put more pressure and caused the cartridge to work until I tried it on a record where it was intermittent again.

your best option is to find a modern equivalent that will work try www.thevoiceofmusic.com first for a cartridge search and ask him also. If you have all the numbers he may be able to help if not try west-tech. This way you can always have spare needles
