Can someone help me locate a schematic or other service literature for a Packard/Philco P-9 Code 122 car radio? The radio is out of a 1934 Packard.

Thanks.

OK, apparently a model listed as a Model 9 in NA. is very similar to the P-9. Tube compliment is the same, and I will investigate if they are one-in-the-same.

Can anyone confirm this?

This chassis diagram layout/line-up for model PA appears to be the same.

The PA schematic shows a 220 volt dynamotor for the B+. That is interesting.

Yeah, I tested it this afternoon on the bench . It's normally mounted in a separate box in the floor of the car.

The drawing shows it tucked under the dash to the left of the steering column. You lucked out finding it down on the floor.

This schematic seems consistent with the chassis of the radio. After recapping, testing tubes and general checks I powered it up today.

While it does power up, it seems very prone to break into oscillation when it gets on a station. There is also quite a bit of whine from the dynamotor.

I'll have to think on this one a while.

After a closer look at the Philco PA schematic, I can say it is the correct one for this radio. The key difference between the PA and Model 9 schematic is the detector/oscillator circuit, and this radio uses the circuit in the PA schematic.

The radio is working well now. I had to correct one wiring mistake of my own doing to correct the oscillations that the radio was experiencing earlier.

Congrats! I don't imagine there are many of those to be found in complete and operating condition.

Now it needs to be installed and checked out in the car. :)

This is the oldest car radio I have seen or worked on.
Interestingly, control head mounts in the dash with mechanical cables to couple the volume and tuner control knobs to the actual radio mounted on the firewall. The only electrical connection to the control head is the pilot lamp.
The speaker is voice coil speaker is separate and mounted on the firewall as well. The voice coil operates on 6 volts DC.
The dynamotor for B+ is mounted in the floor under the rumbleseat in a metal box and connected via wire harness. It is a piece of rotating equipment and while audible, is actually fairly quiet. I was surprised to see that the connections to the dynamotor are made via large fahnestock clips.

Here is the Packard it came out of.

That is beautiful, both the radio and the roadster.
