does anyone know where I can find this color at a reasonable price? I am looking to repaint my chartreuse radio. I have found it for $22 per can. that is kind of expensive.

There are companies that will make custom spray paint cans for you. There is a paint store near me that offers the service. Here's one on the web: http://www.myperfectcolor.com/Custom-Co ... /33865.htm

Go to some of the auto parts stores websites (O'Reilly's, Auto Zone, etc.) and look over their spray paint color selections. The can prices are usually in the single digit range.

Their spray can nozzles are far better, BTW, than what's available at Home Depot.

Maybe you can find a suitable shade in the 1951 Ford colors:
I owned a Chartreuse one just like this one back in 1961.

thank you guys for the info. I have been to about 8 retail and hardware stores with no luck. I am doing this for may 1953 Crosley E15CE. Home Depot is the place with the best price so far even with the spray nozzles not up to par.

Pbpix,

yes that color chartreuse.

I went to the auto parts place nearby, and I found a car cover with the right color no but spray paint.

colors that are close: (I bought these anyway for other radios or possible alternative)

celery gloss by Krylon -- a bit too light
key lime gloss by Rust-oleum -- a bit too loud

See, and that's the rub...But you'll find out when you use it. Good luck!

How about a light green undercoat and a soft yellow over that?

Hi roguethistle,

Chartreuse was a very popular color in the early 1950's. Not just for autos and radios, but also for interior walls of houses, upholstery and drapery fabrics, etc.

To get a perfect match your paint will almost certainly need to be custom-mixed, as Alan V. has mentioned. The Crosley E15 is currently very popular and relatively valuable, especially in the CE chartreuse color. Thus one would be well justified in spending considerable money to get the proper color. Speaking personally, if I owned one I would be very willing to spend anywhere from $25-$50 for the paint to get this "right".

When I restored my Crosley E15WE (white) radio my search for matching paint was much easier! :)

Hi Poston,

I am coming to the conclusion I will need to get chartreuse custom mixed. my Crosley E15CE has been a challenge from the first attempt at restoration.

Have you seen my post on the knob inserts? I did not order the plastic knobs. (yuck) I like the feel of the metal knobs. I did try superglue. that did not work. I did come up with a insert fix there. not the best fix but it works. have you had a problem with the triangle parts on the knob inserts?

next I went to polish the gold trim. It did not polish. it removed some of the gold paint as well as the chartreuse. this is why I want to repaint all of the radio exterior. so far the gold trim did very well with new gold spray paint.

fortunately, the chassis and electronics were restored with no problem. the radio sounds great.

Joe

Yep... Chartreuse is some "good stuff".
Nice as an apéritif or as a relaxing after dinner digestif.

Becherovka is another great one! Most unusual, delicious taste... so nice!
I discovered this wonderful Czech apéritif while visiting friends in Prague back in 1996.

I will have to sample some of these beverages. 8)

Tommorrow I will go to special order my chartreuse paint at Sherwin-Williams. the store 1 block away does not do the special order spray paints. they said the one on the other side of town does.

rouguethistle,
Please let us know how this turns out. I have no doubt that Sherwin-Williams will be able to scan your radio and produce an excellent color match. But I am interested in exactly what type of paint they are able to sell you.

Poston,

I ordered paint today. he said it is high gloss. matched great. Had to get 1 gallon for best price. then they put in spray can for me at $9 per can. I ordered 2 spray cans to start.

I may be selling extra paint soon. time frame: It will take several days to get paint put into spray can.

I expect that you will find at least a few customers for spray paint which matches an E15CE.

I am now in the process of working on a Crosley 10-137 which is also chartreuse, but a much lighter shade than the E15. The top of my radio has alot of chips and scratches which I would like to fix, but the front and one side are mostly good. I don't really want to try to get matching touch-up paint, and I definitely don't want to repaint the cabinet, so i was wondering if anyone has found a method of transferring paint from the inconspicuous bottom of the cabinet to the spots which need touch-up. Has anyone tried using MEK or some other solvent to dissolve a bit of paint from one place and then apply that dissolved paint elsewhere?
