This is a continuation of a thread about a Zenith 12A58 that Ii found a couple weeks ago now... After thoughts of selling it as found, or sending it out for a full restoration by someone else, ....I decided to try the cabinet restoration myself, and boy I picked a doozie.... But its coming along. The top veneer had numerous large chips, so I decided to remove it and replace it...But I wanted a nice book matched walnut, which made my job harder. Here is before and after.. Note that the after pix is NOT totally finished yet, even though it looks nice....this is after staining and grain fill, but not yet lacquered. I am far from a pro, but I gave it my best shot. Hopefully the rest of the cabinet will cooperate....lol

thanks Gary... I took the liberty of using some more of the veneer that i used for the top.... down on the lower platform. Yes, it is not how it was from the factory....but I really think it balances out the radio, with all the burl on the top, the banding, etc..and nothing was added below from the factory.... why waste such beautiful veneer. IMHO, this bottom piece very much balances and compliments the radio, and the contrast next to the grill, when done, should be striking.
Guys here on the forum will likely say "hey its yours, do what you want with it"..which translates to "no way jose..lol"... The next owner can easily swap it out for a bland piece of walnut there if they don't like it.

Looks really good, nice job.

What did you glue the veneer on with? Always interested in how folks go about that.

thanks Gary

The veneer was re-glued with a diluted wood glue, using a puppy feeding syringe, with a smaller tip I made for it, to shoot the glue into the veneer gaps. Then I used clamps for the eges, and weights on top of a board to hold down the veneer to dry.
It would have been easier to just replace the side veneer....but i made the decision to save the original. It is not perfect, as there was water damage to it that created a small ripple area at the bottom of one side...but noone will notice it but me and the next person who buys it....lol

Here is the next phase completed..... I used mohawk dark walnut toner to spray the base... it provides perfect contrast to the burl I substituted for plain vanilla venner on the bottom deck.

Working on the grill... I have no jigsaw or other tool other than a dremel, a file and sandpaper to use to make the cut-outs..., so it is all being done by hand... very tedious!!

This picture is more accurate of the stain/ color of the cabinet now.. the previous posted pix makes it look reddish..not the case.

Here is the grill I made by hand.... no, not perfect...but not bad, and imperfections likely not noticeable by 95% of you guys...lol

Here you go.... cabinet done today.... wow, what a tough job this was... But I am glad I took the time and did it as best as I can...

16 days ago, I was gonna sell it as is... then I thought about getting a Richmond treatment... but I was told to give it my best shot, and I did. Hope you guys enjoy it... I sure will now..!

Cant see any imperfections in the grill from the images; I wouldn't want to make it without power tool help but also would have done a lot by hand. Metal straight edges clamped in place to file to are very helpful.

An excellent restoration.

Enjoy Gary

If I were you, I would be very proud to own that and tell people that you restored it. A beautiful job.

Looks like brand new. Congrats, really fantastic fine work. I've seen some of the kind in museums so that's a real treasure

Ok... I could not resist posting one more picture that highlights the grill I made... the grill is actually darker than what appears here, due to the flash, but you can see it better.
This restoration was exhausting..but a buddy just came over with a half moon 6S249 zenith chairside that needs the full treatment... I'm gonna show him how to do it... lol..and let him knock himself out!

Some of you saw the chairside mentioned above from a craigslist ad in upstate NY..and commented on the forum..he went and got it...it was stained dark and someone wondered if it was a factory ebony finish set. No... someone overstained it dark...
