Basically finished now with the exception of some touch up on cabinet and maybe to change the grill cloth to something else . All n all it really came out nicely and am glad it did it because its looks wonderful. One of a kind 10s669 in high gloss piano finish that was done at the highest quality that one could get. Top notch refinish job that is reserved for the finest of antiques and furniture. This one will go down in the record books and should last another 50 years. The sound of this zenith is quite amazing given is only 74 years old , ten tube push pull and 12 inch speaker pumps out some rich bassie sound, I like that. Like I said its still needs a little work a will be waxed carefully not to get wax into the crevices, Its best to leave the paint cure a few weeks before applying any type of wax. So here you go guys, hope I did ok not making it a butcher or chabby chick job that we all see way to often. I see some compound in crevices already in pictures , that will be taken care of and some of the shots show the reflection on the smooth surface.

That Zenith looks great in Ebony. Something that they should have offered back then (IMO)! Congratulations on a job well done, Fred!

It must have been difficult taking a picture if it, being that it shines like crazy now.

I took some more pictures trying to get the true quality of piano finish rubbed out with 3000 wet sand and polished, looks a lot better in person, it hard to get a good picture

I am working on getting some nickel or chrome plating done on dial pointer, escutcheon and volume nob insert and band control wheel     It may be awhile before that's done and grill cloth also maybe changed out to something else. I don't want to turn this radio into a money pit and I think I already did. Its a labor of love , yes mine time is valuable but at least I know I have the only one like it and any radio collector would like to own it, it really turned out nice and sounds real nice also, plenty of of bass and treble and picks up stations from all over the place. Truly one of zenith's last good looking radios before zeniths war effort started in full swing. Thank GOD we won the war.! :D

Very Nice!!!
While you are waiting for plating, can you show us what it would look like in CANDY APPLE RED?

Fred,

That set looks very beautiful!

I agree with plating the metal items, that will really finish it off.

Thank for posting, Tim

I was just thinking how nice it would look sitting next to a John Vassos designed RCA console:

Thank you all for the kind comments on the custom ebony job I did on the basket radio. It really does look pretty nice and stands out from my other consoles that share the same living quarters. The average person would think it had came from factory like that but we all know it didn't. Not to shabby, at least I didn't butcher it out like we see all the time when a (drone) meaning sh!# for brains gets a hold of one of these antique radios and totally destroys it

Maybe a jewelry store cab do silver plate? Not as brutal as chrome platting. and maybe not that expensive.
Tea pots and such can be re-plated.
After dial bezel and such are plated and polished, lacquer it to forestal tarnish.. (No I have never tried it.)

Great job on the radio, but I also like the old Emerson fan you have to add a nice touch to your decor. I collect old fans as well, and Emerson's were the best, with a totally unique motor design.
I just acquired a mint condition Emerson 77646-AS from 1951. for $20. I couldn't be happier.
