 Post subject: Finish on the metal parts of Western Electric cone speakers

I need to something with the base and frame on one of my AW series cone speakers but I can't figure out how they finished them. It is incredibly thin and almost looks like a sort of plating but it can be scratched too easily.

I would think it would be something like a wrinkle paint done originally. Seeing that it is thin and scratches easily. It was probably baked on originally so that it would hold up over time, most non-baked paint on metal just does not seem to hold up over time. I can't imagine that it was plated. A lot of the old paints had a fair amount of lead in it (at least the enamels did). Who knows,.. I have been proven wrong before. :P
