Just finished up striping and sanding a radio down. Wiped it down with Lacquer Thinner before I applied the stain and have some areas that barely took the stain and sticks out like a sore thumb.

Any ideas what might be the problem?

A picture is worth a thousand words. There are many types of wood and finish used on radio cabinets - raw wood, veneer, plain plywood etc. The striping that you're talking about .... is that the trim that you've applied a toner to? Is the striping toner not sticking?

OK here is a pix, poor quality pix but the problem is on the upper right hand corner. The big white spot on rounded corner. It is a mahogany wood.

What did the spot look like before?

Looks like glue was used there

I wonder if reflowing the lacquer would help it or hurt it. Maybe some of the more experienced guy's would have some idea's.

Bingo, that was it. I realized it after posting. On the section I had a hairline crack I repaired with thinned out wood glue to get it down into the crack. To clean up I just used water and a rag, and forgot to re-sand it and finish up with denatured alcohol. I realized my mistake when looking at it closer and seen the crack because the stain sat into the crack, darkened it, and caught my eye. So I sanded it again, cleaned it up with alcohol, and then reapplied to stain.

Note To Self: Clean it stupid.

All is well now.
