I remember reading on here once someone said to use #000 steel wool and non-pumice Go-Jo to remove years of dirt and gunk off an old finish. I thought this radio looked darn good like it was before, but after this test spot, I did the entire unit with Go-Jo and it looks brand new! It's crazy! I've been Go-Joing wood finishes all day! :D

Btw...can you "Guess That Radio!" ? :)

You should switch to 0000 steel wool, it's a little
easier in the finish.
I've been using it for more than 30 years, it's the
best treatment I've ever found, in fact we call it
"The Treatment". after the finish gets good and dry
apply several coats of Old English scratch cover,
when it's completely dry, you can wipe it with a clean
paper towel and get no brown on it, then start
piling on the Johnson's Paste Wax, use your bare
hand to apply the wax, the heat from your skin
will help the wax get in deep.
As many coats as you feel like doing, buffing it off
between. The finish will have the best protection
you can give it.

"The Treatment".

Is'nt Go-Jo oily and leave residue behind??? It seams like a strange thing to clean a radio with. Question, why to you use steel wool instead of just a cloth rag????

Oily? ABSOLUTELY NOT.
It cuts the build up of greasy dirt on the finish, I've used
it on dozens of radios and other antiques. The 0000 steel
wool is used to break the surface of the dirt and let the cleaner
do it's job.
Radios that I've told would require refinishing have been
turned into award winners after cleaning and waxing.

Try it, I know you'll like it, it's never failed me.

Here's photo of my wife's grandmother's kitchen table
that sat in the middle of her kitchen from 1927 until
we took it home in 1995.
It was just about black with a darkened finish.
The black grease build-up just melted off with the
Go-Jo, I've since put on about 15 coats of Johnsons Paste
Wax. It's solid 3/4" oak and It just glows!

can you use that directly over new stain. I don't want to use any polyurethane and want to give my philco some luster and protection

There'd be no need to use Go-Jo over new stain, it's just a cleaner.
Now the wax, absolutely use it over new stain, and pile it on, the more
coats the better. And the best but a little messy way to apply wax is
with your bare hand, the heat from your skin helps the wax lay down
better. I just use white paper towels to buff it off, then just throw them
away and get a clean one.

Ron, Thanks for answering my question!! I'd like to give your instructions a go at. A question, when useing the steel wool do you work in circles or up and down, back and forth? Also is one cleaning enough? Where do you get your paste wax at? I am in a small town but we have a home depot and menards. Hey, thanks for all the info I am excited to give it a try. I will do before and after pictures!!

A very excited Lynn :D

I don't think it matters what direction you go in,
JUST DON"T BARE DOWN ON THE STEELWOOL.
The weight of your hand should be enough, repeat as
many times as it takes until you can wipe up the used Go-Jo
and it still be white. If it's still brown or black, you're still taking
off dirt.
I buy my Johnson's Paste Wax at Lowes or Home Depot.

I look forward to seeing your results.

This is a gramophone cabinet I did with the stuff.
I dont use steel wool though. I just scoop some out with my hand & rub it on with my hand. Then I use paper towels to wipe the dirty sludge off. I also do what most people dont, and that's wipe everything down with a slightly damp cloth once I'm finished.
Most of what came off this cabinet I think was nicotine.

That's a great side by side comparison, good work.
I found a cruddy old battery set cabinet that someone tossed
in the trash pile after the Charlotte meet that I'm going to
try sectioning off and cleaning and waxing and then a section
that's untouched. to show what can be done.

Using your hand is interesting, but I've never hurt anything
with 0000 steelwool. I do use my hand to rub in wax, I think
the heat of my skin helps melt the wax so it penetrates better.
I also always use Old English scratch cover between the cleaning
and waxing, it really helps.

I was at Menards and Home Depot today looking fo Go Jo and everything had pumice.

Can someone post a picture of the container I should be looking for in the store?

It will be in a white container, orange seems to indicate the presence of pumice:

Sometimes it's easier to find Goop, which is basically the same thing. I recently saw some at Harbor Freight in a handy squeeze tube:

Just remember to get a white container, not orange.

That's right, the white container and Goop is just as good as Go-Jo,
