I started working on this cabinet last summer. It required quite a lot of gluing and clamping. Right now the color resembles what I think it was when new. The bars are real zebra stripe veneer. The last coat of lacquer went on today. I still need a speaker board. Mine is completely delaminated and beyond repair. I thought I had a set of repro Zenith decals, but I must have used them a few years ago. I do have the correct grill cloth replacement I bought before the supply ran out.

That's beautiful! I always love it when I strip down and refinish one of these old radios. The woods that they used are incredible. I'm stripping down a Zenith 420 right now, and I find the center section is Carpathian elm burl. They used woods that we rarely see anymore.
Great work!

Chris

I always loved this cabinet. I had the same model but sold it a couple of years ago and still regret it. Yours looks great!

Real nice. Did you have to reapply dark tone finish on trim?

I used walnut spray toner. I tried a medium walnut, but it was almost yellow. The local paint and lacquer wholesaler has spray cans in different shades. I also get my sanding sealer spray cans there.

The cabinet is very smooth and clean looking, its the dashboard dial that Zenith went to that killed the desire to own.

You did such a nice job! Do you have any "before" pictures? I'd love to see them. I could learn a lot from pictures showing how you got to where you now are with this cabinet restoration. Tom

Very, very nice.
I wish I had your refinishing skills.
