I'm looking for some advice on removal of labels from radio cabinets and chassis. To restore a cabinet or chassis it's often necessary to remove the labels, which ideally would be in one piece so that they can be replaced after restoration. It seems that lots of labels are glued in such a way that they can not be removed without damaging them. I'm particularly puzzled by the glue RCA used on their radios. I've tried various solvents to detach the labels with limited success. Lacquer thinner seems to cut the glue somewhat but it destroys the colored sections of the labels. Any suggestions would be appreciated. :(

I've seen this asked before with no easy or possibly good answer. The only thing that hasn't been suggested is liquid nitrogen or some variant. May be this would crystalize the glue or make it susceptible to a mechanical means of removal without destroying the label. I haven't seen microwave suggested or used, maybe that would affect the glue. Of course it may de-laminate the veneer also.
Maybe some intrepid individual could attempt that with an old oven. I've thought that the perhaps the alternative would be to use one of the older hand scanners to make several copies/runs of the label, photo stitch it together and reprint on old paper or parchment as someone suggested. Then the original could be dealt with as the case may be.

I can't say whether or not this will work for you. What I've been doing, at least with bakelite, is using a credit card with a sharpened edge to scrape it up and off.
