In fixing up a Silver Marshall 37, I need to get some new grill cloth. I've noticed that the usual sources (Radio Daze, Antique Electronics, grillecloth.com) have very little grill cloth these days. Seems like whoever was supplying it isn't anymore, so selection is almost nil. Anyone know of a good source? Or am I going to have to dig around for those old curtains again? Bob

Can you supply a pic of the old cloth?? I may have seen something close in my cyber travels.

Unfortunately, the old cloth was not original, and really must have been a piece of blue cotton cloth somebody had laying around. I can only find one picture of a Silver Marshall 37 table set on the web, and it's on this website. Let's see if I can paste the link: http://www.antiqueradios.com/gallery/v/ ... 7.jpg.htmlI'm assuming this was original, and the few original threads I found on mine were gold too, so it probably was this kind of glossy gold diamond pattern. Let me know if you run across anything like it. Many thanks! Bob

Seems pictures of your particular radio are elusive. The pic of your radio from the above link looks to have a replacement cloth. The only reason I'm saying that is that the cloth pattern isn't symmetrically lined up within the grill openings. Thin evidence I know, but most factory cloth installs tried to make the pattern even.

That's a good observation! Guess I didn't look that closely. It seems like it wouldn't be possible to make this totally symmetrical because the width of the diamonds doesn't exactly match the space between columns of the cabinet.
So, are you saying that for a factory set the grill cloth would actually be designed to fit the space exactly, and then lined up before being installed? Seems like a lot of trouble, but maybe it's one of those things a manufacturer would be expected to do. Interesting.
Wish I knew whose set this was so we could ask if it was original.
Thanks again,
Bob

I guess our only hope is that someone on the forum here has your model in original condition and can post a picture.

Nortonics wrote: I'm thinking a similar cloth to this past auction on a different Silver Marshall model: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... true&rt=ncLooks original on that radio, and would look good on your 37 I think. There is a past 37 listed, but no way is that cloth original: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... true&rt=ncYeah, that second link is the one i bought! Tore out the old blue stuff and stripped off the brushed-on varathane. Should have refinishing done in a couple of weeks, weather permitting. And thanks to Tim Tress and his advice in another post just now, I've got it working good as new. Even found an original knob to replace the missing one. Only thing left to do is that grill cloth... Then I plan to hold on to it till i die, which is what collecting old radios is all about. Bob

You may want to check out this other thread. I have been looking for a grill cloth as well. As I said, I just ordered one from Nico in Italy. Cost me $64 (shipping included) for a console cloth, so not cheap. If you look at the 4 pages of grill cloths he has, some of them look similar to the Silver Marshall posted on eBay. I plan to post my views when the cloth arrives. The fellow in charge is Nico... very responsive to emails and you can pay via PayPal. Just have to see the quality now and the shipping time. viewtopic.php?f=7&t=191014Also, see this link on a separate discussion: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=190655

Thanks, phlogiston. And I thought you didn't exist! Based on the available evidence, it looks like gold grill cloth with diamond pattern was likely the original. Haven't seen anything available that's close to it anymore, but will keep looking. How many people besides us are really going to be able to tell if i put a non-original one in, provided it isn't as wild as the psychedelic one above?

Finding a color or pattern in modern fabrics is the easy part. Its finding these fabrics in sheer form. There is a stark difference in "feel" between fabric meant for pillows and curtains and fabric meant for grill or speaker cloth. They say you should have no trouble breathing through fabric meant for a radio grill so that you dont impede the sound from the speaker in any way. Most fabrics for upholstery or curtains and clothes are just to heavy for this. This is a decent fabric....but shows as "medium" weight. http://www.buyfabrics.com/p-6259-jla-co ... abric.aspx

So we go from McMurdo Silver to Pamela Anderson. Hmmm... Maybe you guys need more than old radios Anyway, does anybody believe that entropy doesn't exist? I see it all around me. Heat death of the universe someday, like a burned up power transformer... Bob
