They aren't quite SO259, what are they exactly?

Can anyone think of a reason not to change them to BNC so I connect a proper test lead?

This question is asked 3,334,404 times a month (on rough average.. :) ) Needs to be a sticky! It is an Amphenol single button mike connector. A nut mounted BNC is an exact fit for the opening, no drilling. Lots of guys do that mod.

That is an old Amphenol microphone connector. Common on lots of cheaper test equipment back then. Both the plug and jack are still available but it takes some digging to find it.

It's also quite common to replace it with a BNC as you suggested.

Make a coax patch cord to go from single button mike to BNC, SO-239, or whatever you need.
That way, the equipment stays original, and you have the more convenient fittings.

Or, do as I did and make a microphone-connector-to-bnc adapter. Just buy one of the microphone connectors from the previously mentioned sources and mount a BNC connector in the back of it. Then, just thread the adapter onto the microphone connector in question and presto-magico you now have a BNC connector on your unmolested piece of vintage test gear.

If you can find one of the cheap CB coax connectors ( the type that screw on) with the center pin having a plastic-nylon type insulator.
The threaded sleve on these connectors is very short.Cut off most of the center pin. It will now substitute for the Amphenol.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but recycling is a virtue, right?

I just picked up an Eico 322 this past weekend, and I want to replace the connectors with BNC ones.

A search on Radio Shack's website turned up zilch.

A search on Digikey's website turned up thousands of results which I can't even begin to figure out how to wade through.

Does anyone here who has done this, remember what they used? And where they got it?

only a few mouse clicks. Try this one. It's just the cheapest from their list.

I checked my local RS today; they had a spot in their cabinet (part number 278-0105) for chassis BNC connectors, but they were out - as were all area stores (central Maryland) - and they couldn't find the part# in their system to order more. I checked RS's website, and couldn't find it there, either.

Oh the pain and intolerable suffering from dealing with a single button mic. connector -- will it ever end? Not until all of that vintage crap becomes melted scrap!

Won't changing the Amphenol mic connector to a bnc on the Eico 322, ruin the collector value of the instrument?

I have my doubts anything from Eico has collector value. Too many of them everywhere for the grabbing, and I'll leave it at that!
