I know nothing about it i just have a picture but as its free im not going to turn it down.
Im guessing from the picture its solid state, i was told everything works, so even if its cheap i can use it for spares.

Is this 1970s? or is it late 1960s?
From the photograph it looks to be in nice condition i actually like the colour and style, if it doesnt need too much work it looks like she could be a keeper.

Man, that is one substantial hunk of wood! Style isn't my cup of tea, but no matter what it's in perfect shape, free, it's a Zenith, and you will have memorable fun with it! :) Looking forward to plenty of pics and details...

This thing is in amazing condition, belt drive turntable, eight track recorder that works and a really powerful amp.
The bass from this thing shakes the room.
I notice Zenith consoles where not made in Canada but shipped from the States.
This must be one of the last good quality consoles Zenith made before they became cheap, solid wood it weighs a tonne, i dont think its going to need much to press it into regular service.
Turntable needs to be serviced it plays ok but wont auto return at end of record, probably the usual dried grease.
I will probably pull the amp and repalce the output caps to be on the safe side but other than that shes perfect.
sometimes free is good if your willing to take a risk, a definate good adition to my collection of solid state consoles.
It was an older couple who had had it from new, i even have the original instruction manual.
Anybody give me an age? im guessing about 1973?

Cool!!!

Those Allegro's are in demand, both in the consoles and as component sets. Usually they sound best with the speakers that came matched with them, so you should have the correct set there, I'm assuming. Finding the whole thing on the 'bay is usually harder and definitely more expensive.

The bass on this thing blows me away, but im not suprised i took the back off to clean the pots and the speakers are massive and it has very nice solid state amp in there, not cheap by any means.

The older couple up the street from me has one of them. - I serviced it a few years back.
1980 model. - same control panel.
BSR changer.
I.C. chip amps - about 8W/ch.

I was going to say the early 80's was when it was made. Zenith after sold to LG was the last to make a console tv set around 2004.

If you can find a chassis and/or model number, I can probably tell you what year it's from. I've worked on a few lower end Zenith's from the late '70's that had a similar control panel. I'll warn you that those output IC's do fail and they are hard to find; so, it might be a good idea to find some spares while you can. I fixed a '79 model that needed both output IC's and they had been discontinued by NTE/ECG. It's just that I got lucky and the local parts house happened to have two left in stock.

Does your changer use a magnetic cartridge? All of the Zenith belt driven changers that I've seen had Shure magnetic cartridges in them.

From what you describe, this sounds like Zenith's last effort to build a decent console. By the mid-to-late '70's, most consoles had gone to total crap in terms of quality. Now, you need to find one of the solid state Zenith's with the point-to-point handwired chassis.

Well i did some servicing on it i took the turntable apart and relubbed it, it now works very well, belt drive and very quiet in operation.
I need to sort out the slider controls for volume, bass, treble, balance, ive never been a fan of these type of controls, always seem to get dust and dirt in them right at the very bottom so when you go to turn the volume up it either starts off with one channel
working and it crackles till you wiggle the slider.
I will have to flood it with switch cleaner and lube see if that gets the dirt out.

Do flood out all the crud in there with your cleaner to begin with, then follow it up with a light coat of Deoxit. It's the de facto standard to correct problems like that, for the most part permanently. Spend the money on a little bottle, it'll last you forever, and you will never regret it.

@ radiotvnut, i hada Zenith Allegro standalone 8track/tuner/amp that had blown output transistors, i eneded up scrapping it because it had numerous other problems, so i know i need spares im going to try and find another unit i absolutely love this console.
Its had a fair work out now, been playing my Genesis/Phil Collins lps and some other stuff, it puts a lot of modern solid state stuff to shame there is just something about the way it sounds, it draws you in and i really love the deep bass and clean treble.
This weekend its going to get its output capacitors replaced and a general checkover, guard against the transistors blowing if i can.
Thanks for all the comments.

I'm tellin ya it's got IC chip amps in it..... not seperate transistors.
And as radiotvnut just confirmed my earlier statement, it was made in 1980.

Best thing to do is go over the main filter caps.

your right it uses Toshiba ICs TA7200P rated at 10 watts per channel, i will change the output caps but those ICs are considered reliable and you can still get them.
Must have been the last decent console Zenith made and judging by the Foster speakers in there id say they did a good job.
