Just picked a Magnavox system. Radio works beautifully, phonograph is having some issues. Turntable starts to spins, but suddenly stops and needle arm does not move on it's own or lower... Would love any help with trouble shooting this...

Thanks,
Casandra

Are these visible to everyone? Kinda funky link so I'm not sure.

Thank you so much for posting those pics. Hopefully now I can get some help. I have been running into brick walls with trying to find info on this system/phonograph.

One comment I have on this. If that's the original radio in there (and it probably is), then why would they place the dial numbers and lettering sideways like that? Just sayin'....

Here's one more picture....

I honestly have no idea if its a original radio or not. I have having EXTREME difficultly locating info on this system. But original or not, radio works great and for $5.00 I'm not complaining....Just wish I could get phonograph re-working

Casandra,

That's a great deal for $5.00!

I must say, though...if you are running the radio and amplifier with original parts inside, you risk more than
having problems with only the turntable. With a unit this old (at least 45-50 years old), it's really a must
that you have the radio and amplifier serviced. Running it with the original parts inside is very risky. Doing
so could cause the power transformer to short out, and that may cause a fire. Trying to find a new transformer
could also prove to be not easy, and may be expensive.

The good news is that once you have everything serviced, this will be a fine system! Bottom line...if you haven't
gotten the radio and amplifier serviced, that should be done first. Then worry about the turntable after that.

Good luck!

Remove the back panel (use a quarter-inch nut driver) and either take some pictures or give us the chassis numbers on the amplifier (mounted in the bottom of the cabinet) and the tuner/preamp (mounted above). We'll tell you what you've got.

The sideways dial is normal on those early low consoles. Don't know if they had lots of the older dial glass left
over or not but they were like that for a little while before they switched.

Magnavox used that tuner on a number of models, and yes, decided to mount it in the Imperial even though it is sideways! It is the original tuner.

I agree that the radio & amplifier should be serviced at this age, as should the record changer, but I'd like to point out that the 45 rpm spindle with the unit is the wrong one for your record changer. You have a Collaro record changer and that 45 rpm spindle is for a VM record changer.

That changer uses two tires under the turntable, one to run the table the other to operate the reject system.

If they both stop at the same time then something is probably binding up and stopping the motor.
Very possible the motor itself needs cleaned and lubed.

It's easy enough to remove the retaining clip and lift the turntable off to have a look.
