Problem With Grundig 1950's Tone Arm

Troy - thanks - after seeing the video I have to agree with you - most likely the gear - but why does the arm go over correctly on 45 rpm records if it is the gear jamming - wouldn't the gear stick or jam on 45 rpm also? Seems the problem happens only when using 33rpm and not 45rpm - this is why I am scratching my head.

It could also be the little arm that moves down when you play 33s thats sticking.

I think but do not know this bsr table that good but if like there latter tables. Under the platter is a gear that would move the arm. I think the gear is jammed. In this video you can see this gear.

Troy, the issue with this BSR Monarch is most likely a gummed-up metal pin buried in the mechanism underneath.
Unless you know what to look for, (as us ahem, experienced techs do) this pin and it's function during the change cycle will baffle anyone - and thus create a never-ending thread (as mentioned in my previous post).

I think that, on 33, things move so slowly, that the little gremlin that moves the arm over to the record falls asleep out of boredom.
That is at least as good a theory as some others advanced.
