I believe the Original version of Unchained Melody is the 78 rpm by Al Hibbler.

Don't quit your day job of fixing record players to become a record historian just yet, RT, lol!

Referenced from Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles, 1955-1993.

Unchained Melody
Les Baxter, debut, 4/9/55, peak position #1
Al Hibbler, debut, 4/9/55, peak position #3
Roy Hamilton, debut, 4/23/55, peak position, #6
June Valli, debut, 5/14/55, peak position, #29

That's a list of dates with ratings, stinker.
It doesn't clue me in on WHEN a particular recording was actually made.
grrr....

You originally posted, "original version", so what part of "debut" don't you understand? Doesn't matter when they recorded it...It's the release date that's cogent. :P

I have them both, I like them both, and I have the Bro's version too, and I like that one as well.
Now I'm outa breath and need another cigarette.

Actually I wanted to let you down easy, youngster;

the first recorded version was by Todd Duncan, who sang Unchained Melody on the soundtrack of "Unchained", a 1955 prison film.

BTW, how much do smokes cost these days? When I quit they were 80 cents a pack (highway robbery).

80 cents???
I vaguely remember that price.
Here in Philly now I pay $4.80 a pack for Pall Mall "blue" - Marlboro's are much higher.
Blame the you-know-whos for that.

And yes, I knew about the prison movie and the soundtrack.

I just have to share this after all the discussion on the return of records, and ultimately, the vinyl format. :D

So break out your no-longer-playing, mis-burned, or obsolete CDs, and welcome back vinyl by turning them into records. ;)

It sure has! It may even usher in a craze for 5 and 3 inch formats. ;)

The nice thing about the CDs is the polycarbonate is soft enough to indent yet is hard enough to resist wear on playback. The downside is if you can't use them under a mainstream cutter head. You'll get more distortion than anything else. All these were made with a blunt tip stylus. So if you see chip, you have distortion. ;)

Great news.I was not happy when CD's first came out. They sound like crap.Artwork that you can't see unless you have a microscope to see it. I'm 50 .I still have my record collection and its still growing.most of the records and 45's are country and some rock,R&B records.I've been reading about the industry want to start phasing CD's out due to Itunes,Amazon downloads.I'll never buy a MP3 or any file format of a album.Virus attacks plus computer hard drive crashes say goodbye to the tunes collection. Most people don't backup computers these days.I hope the LP and the 45's will come back strong and say good buy to CD's.The question is .How todays music will sound on vinyl. I'm now a fan of todays hit to find out.BTW nice Tammy collection.I'm a big Tammy fan myself.

Hey, for being in MINT condition and only 3 bucks at the flea market, I just couldn't pass it up.
