On my RCA Victor EY 7 circa 1955-57, I notice that the turntable rotates a couple of times after shut-off (with a full stack of 14 records), while on my older EY-3 circa 1950-52, the turntable stops after only about a quarter- or half-revolution. Is this just a difference between models or an indication that the spindle bearings need to be re-greased? Otherwise, performance is comparable in these units. BTW, the EY-3 has the Willie Bosco O-ring idler (which works great and fixed a slight flutter) while the other unit has a traditional idler (and a slight flutter...) Also, I was using white lithium grease on sliding metal parts and noticed that it turned yellow and got viscous, apparently due to heat build-up. So now I'm trying a red high-temp wheel bearing grease that resembles the old "Stay-Put." Any suggestions there?

The platter inertia at shutoff is determined basically by the motor itself. Another factor can be the grip of the idler wheel.
....it all depends on how WELL the changer has been serviced.

Some Garrards actually have a brake that stops it immediately after shut off. You can tell by the little ping they make at the end.

That's the one I have and that's what it does. Maybe it's not meant as a brake, what Ken said, a sound to tell you it's finished. It stops the platter quick though.

The usual Garrard changers that come into my shop are a bit more "modern" - Lab series on up to the infamous Z-100 era. That ding is annoying.

They always have hardened, broken platter mats. And I think they're ugly as sin. - the arm reminds me of a turd in a toilet. I might have a few laying in a "parts" pile in the corner of the shop.

Your EY-7 has a rare condition known as spinitis. Don't let it bother you... just spin the 45s and watch the turntable turn.

I have an OLD (1920 or so) Edison wind up Diamond Disc unit that has a little cork on a pawl that stops the table.
"SNARKY"--I like that. That just might stick.

I have no idea what a "nook" is, but, Mr.Repair Tech, sir, Mary spelled it correctly, while, unfortunately, YOU spelled it incorrectly. There is no "e" after the "g". "K-N-O-W-L-E-D-G-A-B-L-E". Knowledgable. I just looked it up to be certain. Sorry.....................GREG

According to my Webster's Dictionary, it's knowledgeable... A way to remember this is "If you're knowledgeable, your 'knowledge' will be 'able' to wow your friends!"
Hope this helps! Source(s): Webster's Dictionary
