While at the Farmington Hills Michigan meet, I picked up a Garrard RC80 changer fitted with an Audak cartridge.
This cartridge is a double sided type which the entire thing flips over. (78 or LP)

I've never seen this pickup before, and there is precious little info in a Google search. Best I can find it is an HF16? judging from this site.

Or perhaps that is the tone arm part number? I don't know.

This feeds a GE preamp designed for their VR pickups.

Is this a decent phono pickup? Is it junk? Is the GE preamp a good choice for it?
Was this sold with the Garrard? or just made to fit Garrard changers?

What have I got here?

Thanks!
-Steve

It is a Magnetic cartridge from about 1955. They were made in special plug in mounts for the popular tables of the day like VM and Garrard as well as standard mounts.
Audax also made a tonearm with this mount or standard mount.

They were ok for the time, not quite as good as the GE and Fairchilds of the era in my opinion.

Here is an ad from "Audio" magazine, September 1955. It was a decent cart but I think the stylus wasn't user replaceable.

orthophonic, charlief64, Thank you both for the info!
I forgot to look in magazines of the day such as on AmericanRadioHistory.com

I know Audak has been around a long time as I see an ad in Radio Retailing in April 1929 for their pickup. It was probably nothing special then either.

EDIT: I found these screen captures in the June issue of Audio magazine. The Garrard ad shows an Audax installed.
Then a writeup on the Audax cartridge was found.

The magazine said the RC80 was first advertised in Audio magazine in November 1950 and still regarded as an excellent changer in 1955.
I find that impressive :D

I hope I can figure out which model of the Audax pickup I have. I didn't see a model number on it.
