This afternoon I was at a relatives place for our Thanksgiving celebration... 25 adults & 10 children... At least 20 smart phones popping out from time to time to show somebody something. One person was talking about how the phone audio was too low to hear in a room full of people... Getting home and WAY TOO FULL of 25 or so sampled dishes and totally useless for meaningful work I got to thinking about how folks might have built passive horns for their smart phones... Google Images showed me many variations on the theme... Way too many showcase the fact that they are clueless about impedance matching a mechanical radiator to free space.

I took out my $ 69 LG Tracfone and held it to the throat of my nearest horn speaker bell and saw that it did indeed match pretty well and apparently much better than what I saw on-line. Then it clicked.... How could I match it to the BEST PHONOGRAPH HORN EVER DESIGNED? That of the Victor Orthophonic record players of the late 1920s..

I HAD to go to the shop and kluge something for test. In a half hour I had sawn this out of MDF board and was ready to test... I was impressed! My LG phone audio is a wimp compared to the flagship phones.... Not as loud as playing a record, but still loud enough for easy listening...

I've always said every radio collector needs at least one acoustic disc record player if for no other reason than to show the various phonograph driver attachments that would let you play your radio through the phonograph horn.

So now you can demo a smart phone attachment as well :D

Robert

Very interesting/informative post.
I agree about the Victor orthophonic folded horn machines. I have owned two 8 series credenza units.

Very Nice Robert!

I've done the same with my VV 4-3. However, I didn't build the cool adapter you did! I just propped my phone against the arm. I'm still amazed at how well the exponential horn works. You are absolutely right when you say that everyone should own one! :)

Best,
Russ

Cute and it looks like some thinking was done.... I'll bet they are pissed every time the speaker port on the phone moves.

You could get even more volume by mounting a small Bluetooth speaker to the record player.

Some of these are about the same size as the reproducer.

You dog!

Your idea is going to have me in the shop this afternoon wasting another half hour to kluge another MDF thingy to mount a $9 Bluetooth hockey puck player I bought more than a year ago... The sound is impressive. I take it on trips to use in the hotel room... Set it on the floor at a corner of the room and it can ROCK!

OK.... to quote Red Skelton's 'mean widdel boy' I DOOD IT!

Coupled my $ 9 hockey puck Bluetooth speaker to the horn...

With my particular unit, the audio is fully as loud as playing with a LOUD steel needle.

In other words a good 10 db better than my wimp cell phone...

Enough pointless fun... Back to real radio projects...
