Yes, your correct he did say it was displaying a tristed up picture and likened it to a spinning tornado. Oh I always think about the worst case until it doesn't happen.

This has been a great project so far, I was really pleased at the condition of the veneer. My last two case restorations involved having to strip off and replace with all new veneer, WHAT A BITCH that was!

This weekend I'm going to concentrate on the High Voltage power supply. Cleaning inspection, testing of the HV cap's and check out all the resister reading to make sure they are in spec. By the end of the weekend I should have all the Chassis' ready to just start replacing the cap's when they arrive.

Steve...I'll give you my two cents' worth on the approach to that horizontal / high voltage section. You can plug it into that transformer supply and bypass (short) its interlock connector. Plug the two chassis together, attach the yoke and you almost have half the set together for testing. Lacking the horizontal control (on the video chassis), you can tack a small resistor in the wiring in its place. If things are reasonable, you'll hear a slight hiss around the high voltage cups.....the cable ( hopefully) disconnected. Safe bet the 2-watt megohm resistors need changing. CRAIG

I really have to hand it to you, especially after that fisheye problem you had to overcome.

Things like that can be very discouraging, but you pressed on, and WOTTA result!

The flaming in that bookmatched veneer on the front is really impressive.

When I first picked it up I new it was going to be a nice set but I had no Idea just how beautiful the wood grain was going to be until the stain went on, my jaw dropped when I saw it for the first time! The wood grain on the veneer is such a tortured twist of directions; I wonder how they can cut a thin slice like that and not have it just crumble into pieces while they sliced it? One other note about the case restoration, the control area directly below the picture screen is the only area that retains the original finish. The only thing I did in that area was to hit it with Howard's restore-a-finish. The finish in that area was in pretty good shape because when you close everything down to the stored position it was protected and didn't suffer the decline the rest of the outer finish experienced. The hardest part of the restoration was bringing the chemical stripper right up to that control area and not getting any on it! It was very tedious work but I pulled it off, I really wanted to save that area if I could because of all the decals, I didn't want to mess with them.

I just hope now that the electronic restoration goes smoothly, it would be quite a showpiece if I can pull this off.

I've been working on my Philco cabinet for what, a year now?

Isn't it amazing what used to be available? People today think because they have a 52-inch flat-screen TV with stereo sound and inputs for a bunch of different gizmos, that they have something luxurious. People today don't know what luxury is.

Thank you for working so hard to preserve a piece of history from a time when people who had worked hard for their money could buy something worth owning. There is a degree of solid satisfaction in consumer products from that era you cannot get today, no matter how much money you spend.

Thats no joke! You pretty well summed it up right there! I wish we could go back to that era of good consumer products and somethign worth owning!

Thank you all for your very generous comments about my work on this TV so far. At this point I have just over 40 hours into it. Here are two close-ups of the control console area. This portion of the finish is all original, treated with Howard's and wax. This area was very neat and clean to start with. I was most excited when I went to pick it up and it had all it's knobs, this was the first TV I purchased with a complete set of all it's knobs.

That is a beautiful piece of furniture. You, sir, have done it a wonderful justice.
