Haven't been here is a LONG time, too many other things taking up my time lately.
I have Garnet (made in Winnipeg MB) guitar amplifier head, I believe it's a Pro200 Super. It does work but all the caps are original and I would like to start replacing them. Does anyone here have experience with vintage guitar amps and the like?

I thought I had some pics handy, I'll have to wait 'till I get home this evening to post them.

Hi Inno,

I found excellent support for Garnet Amps by joining the yahoo group
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/garnet-amps/

Look for Larry Kohut, he has all the old schematics and worked with Gar, so he knows his stuff.

Good luck with your Garnet, they are becoming very collectible.

curious what kind of capacitors are in it now ? are they radial or axial ? mylar, bumble bee, wax or ceramic ? replace radial with polypropylene and axial with polyester. there are very expensive and moderate priced capacitors. does the amp work at all ?

I wouldnt just change all the caps.Unless the coupling caps are bad,I'd leave them be.The electrolytics are a whole different story. An amp that age should have the electros changed, but the others, unless they are leaking should be left alone. You could severely change the sound of the amp,not necessarilly for the better.I've only come across one of these Garnets here in the states, they have a good rep, although they never really took off like the Fender or Marshalls did.Bachman Turner overdrive are the only "big names" that come to mind that used them.I believe Randy Bachman was involved with him in the 70's in developing some models.Thye one I saw was very well built,it was many years ago, dont remember the model, very good sounding overdrive circuit.

Actually, The Guess Who used them for their trademark sounds as well. First with Randy Bachman, then Kurt Winter (in my opinion, using the amps' sound to even greater success). Check out the stuff Kurt did with the GW from 1970 to 73. That's the sound. LPs like Share The Land, Rockin', Road Food and So Long Bannatyne really showcase it.

You can even see Kurt wearing Garnet sweatshirts on most of the group's album covers. He never dressed up beyond that. LOL
