I'm pleased to announce the return of a rather rare "Baby Transoceanic" Zenith Model 94 Inter-Oceanic
Multiband Radio.

A grounded out coil, some bad contacts in the rotary switch and a broken dial cord had this little girl almost destined for the radio graveyard but I was able to get a hold of her and get her on the workbench.

With her 8 "D" batteries installed, she weighs in at a healthy 11 1/2 pounds and has a beautiful voice.

First one if those I've seen. It's very attractive. Is it a US made radio or was it Asian manufactured?

...good job...those are quite nice (I had one once, not quite as good shape as that one!); mid-60s vintage (mine had 1966 code dates on its parts), and again, typical Zenith build with a real metal chassis inside (one fairly small IF/audio printed circuit board, everything else is point-to-point on the chassis)...that, along with the 8 D cells, helps explain the heft...same 5x7 speaker as the T-Os, hence the sound quality...
...they have those hard-sealed Collins electrolytics in them; they were found in numerous Zenith models of that vintage and it seems to me they've been mentioned on here before as something to watch out for...
...btw, Ed, those were US-built, but they did have some imported components in them...

Hi Ed,

Made in Chicago.

I believe the model number is R990

Chasis number is 11NT44Z8

Out on the internet is:

"A Brief History of Zenith Royal Transoceanic Royal 1000" A Speech by Ray Andrejasich
Before a 1996 Quarterly Meeting of the Indiana Historical Radio Society.

In his speech he mentions the Model 94 and he referred to it as one of the "Baby Transoceanics:"

Quote:
This model (The Royal 1000) was followed by many iterations, along with a line of lower cost multi-band receivers that I would call Oceanic "babies." One of these receivers is the Royal 94 FM/AM multi-band radio. It exhibits the typical chrome die-castings and the black leatherette trim like the Transoceanic. The sort wave bands offer continuous coverage from 1.6 to 18 MHZ. The graphics on the rear of the set say "Zenith Inter-Oceanic Multi-band"

And the Model 94 is not the only "Inter-Oceanic." There is also a Model 91:

Here's another link with more info on the Model 94:

I was able to get the manual. Here's part of the first page with some of the system info (hope you can read it):

Well, I wasn't planning on a photo shoot but might as well get all the photos in here to capture as much as possible about the radio.

BTW My chassis also has numbers indicating 1966.

Here's the back of the radio:

Callins! They do blow up occasionally. Makes a loud sound and spreads plastic shrapnel all over the place.

Thanks for posting those photos. That tuning gang drive wheel looks a lot like the one in 1000.

Nice radio Preston......did you find the Service Manual on the Internet? If so, can you tell me the site name....I have been looking for a manual for a while. Would you consider scanning the Manual and sending it to me?
Thanks much!!

Looks great! Zenith Radio never really made it big here in the UK, it's a shame. :(
