Every Friday at midnight WBBM broadcasts "When Radio Was." I listen to this program on an early 1930 Philco model 20 tombstone. The broadcast is from the era of my radio and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I get WBBM like a local station here in Fort Worth at night. But midnight? Not at my age!

Friday? They have that show on at midnight every weeknight (M-F)! Then, WIND (560 am) out of Chicago has OTR on Saturday evenings from 8 or 9 until midnight.

:D

WBBM used to have another OTR show back in the 80s, didn't they? Hosted by Chuck Schaden, IIRC. I recall listening to that one from my bedroom in Minnesota many years ago. That's what got me interested in old radio shows.

Chuck Shaden's show was called "Those Were the Days."
He has his own website now, with some of those shows available.
But also, there are gobs of interviews he did over the years with old time radio personalities.

I wonder why radio stations think only insomniacs would be interested in old time radio programming? I would think that a station could get an audience with regular broadcasts at 7 or 8 PM instead of the wee hours of the night. Can't be any smaller than they are drawing now in most cases during the evening.

I suspect that it would indeed be a smaller audience. And advertisers would be less willing to pay for ad time during OTR programming than during the station's usual programming fare.

Yes, I think that was the program that I remember. I did head over to the speakingofradio.com site and briefly listened to a few minutes of one of the broadcasts, and remember now that Schaden sometimes sounded a bit like Fibber McGee (Jim Jordan). :)

Listening to any stations but the big stations on AM around here after 5 pm one hears very few paid ads on a local basis...only national spots for gold sellers, tax resolution, etc...in the talk shows or satellite music. No local spots - always psas.
