Yes, I did see that web page, very good. I have to get this set into the shop and have a good look yet but it's all original underneath.. no repairs have been made.

Scarce but not rare, most were used in nice safe and warm rooms on US soil mainly during the war when the FCC had monitoring facilities all over the country. Others were used in mobile equipment to help catch the bad guys. When they were sent to surplus many followed FCC hams home

I have a SX-17F which also has a single audio tube as well as an AC-DC switch for 117VAC/6VDC and a S mter zero switch on the front panel. I dont know if Halli privided a vibrator PS for the 17 or 28 FCC.

Does this receiver have the cabinet? Reason why i ask is, i have not seen the FCC label before altho the FCC FBIS
and so on used tons of them. IF you have no cabinet, i wonder if this rec came out of the "SSR-1" package,
which was an SX-28 together with McLoughlin sideband demodulator packaged together in a metal desk. This was
rated "SECRET" during WW2. I have photos of this unit, but i don't think you can see the label with good enuff
resolution. -Hue

Looks like it was either modified to single-ended audio, or that was a factory mod, judging from the hole plug on the chassis on the left side in your last pic. Hard to tell exactly, but does it have a pair of 6V6s or just one?

The FCC version had SINGLE ended output using one 6V6 as opposed to the regular SX-28 which had Push Pull output .

To save battery power as many of these were used in mobile operations .Federal agents driving around in cars mounted with th SX-28/S-27 (FCC versions) rcvrs listening to clandestine transmissions !

The battery power savings also played a big part and it was easier to have just one model built to spec as was the SX-17FCC that even had the Battery/AC switch on the front panel. Leading up to and during WW2 and the Commie hunts after there were quite a lot of mobile installations.
