R-388 is the military version and has a slightly different antenna input circuit.
R-388 will have military inspection stamps somewhere (generally) and most are coated with MFP varnish inside. Nameplates are often missing on the R-388, evidently because they were sold by hams who got them via the MARS program and were not supposed to dispose of them.

R-388/URR From the serial number it is probably Signal Corps contract 3357-PHILA-52 with an MFP date of 12/52 The ID tag would look like this one - cheers, Nick K4NYW http://www.navy-radio.com/rcvrs/r388.htm
