Pete, that may be one I got, the 3357, see photo at:

But if it matched the Gooney Bird II, had a preamp, and was for 2 meters only, it is probably the 3024, see photo at:

One interesting thing about the 3357 is that it has a built in varactor FM modulator. You plug the mike into the VFO and can transmit in FM.

Yep, that's it!!!! The 3024 model! I must have sold it along with my
homebrew AM VHF rig. It did the job.
I have the 6N2 converter and 6N2 transmitter to get on the air one
of these days.

Too bad you sold it, that VFO is pretty rare these days. Gonset sold the 3024 (2 meters only), the 3357 (50, 144, and 220, but have you ever seen a 220 mhz Gooney Box?), and the Gonset VHF VFO (6 & 2, one of these sold for over $160 last week on eBay).

Your 3024 was plug and play, no mods needed (like a short of RFC1)?

If you want to complete your 6N2 collection, you can have my 6N2 VFO for $20 plus shipping. As we discussed before, I also have the 6N2 Thunderbolt amp, did not sell it at the hamfest.

Although working on the Gonset has sometimes made me scream, overall it has been fun. Guess it always is when you figure it out at the end.

Just to update anyone who has been following my story, I have sold the Johnson 6N2 VFO and installed the Gonset 3357 VFO. The 3357 mates perfectly with my Communicator II, full output, no mods necessary. Best of all, the 3357 has a built in FM modulator and it works fine, so I now have an AM and FM rig. Next project is to install a PL tone board on the modulator, and then perhaps I will be able to work repeaters with the old Gonset.

Appearance wise, the 3357 is not a perfect match for the Comm II, it looks like more of a match of the Comm III. It has the old-style dial with a pointer that is moved by a string attached to the tuning knob. That is the only flaw in this VFO, the pointer is a bit sticky and does not track perfectly. I'll bet there is someone on this forum who knows how to fix that.
