I think that what your looking for is what's called a prison TV. These had a clear plastic case which allowed guards to see the internal components and also any stashed contraban. These turn up on eBay from time to time.

Pretty common on eBay. If you want a cheap one, look up the pawnshops near your state penitentiary. I'll bet the clear "con TV" is just about the first thing a guy dumps when he gets out of the joint. Serious chick repellent, right up there with the orange jumpsuit.

Or, he could be referring to Predicta TVs, with the picture tube mounted on top above the rest of the TV cabinet. Darryl, can you describe what you are looking for more clearly?
I bought one of the clear-cabinet TVs a year ago or so on Ebay, I think they are cool. After Phil's comments, though, maybe I should hide it the next time I invite a date to my house. (-:

Darryl-
As TJM70 said, the TVs you are thinking of are the Predicta sets made by Philco about 1958-1960. They are often available on Ebay, including fully restored and working ones, but those are not cheap ($600-1000+). If you just want one as a display but not to turn on, you can find them for $200 or even less sometimes. Just keep checking Ebay and Craigslist.

Yeah, the collectors have driven the prices up pretty high. If you'd like to see some in action you might get a kick out of this music video: http://youtu.be/Rb7fLA5ccWg
