It's a ballast tube.

Do you have any idea what the value is?

Unless you know what equipment they went in, they would be hard to sell. Your best bet is to look at some of the on-line tube dealers and see if they have them listed.

they are still being made, or at least Amperite has them listed in their catalog.

ok. so i talked to amperite directly and they gave me a price of 149.99. does that sound right. also they said that it is the same exact one that they still manufacture now than back in 1945. is there moer demand on vintage stuff? would you expect to spend this much to aquire a tube?

It's not a tube, it's a resistor....

Depends who needs it. The average radio restorer/collector, no way. An industrial customer who needed one to maintain a piece of equipment, no problem. Trick is, without knowing what equipment used it, you can't guess at the demand. Very probably it went into one particular piece of military gear and there is no demand whatsoever now. On the off chance that someone did need one, I'm sure there are dealers who have them in stock and would be happy to unload them for a lower price. Only the dealers can tell you now what the demand is. If it's none, or one or two a year, they probably have enough stock to last "forever" and wouldn't be inclined to buy any more.

Bottom line: they're worth whatever they will bring on ebay or whatever a dealer will give you. What it costs Amperite to manufacture new ones isn't very relevant.

With ballast tubes, the market is all in the application. One guy in our local club carries a box full and offers any one tube, or the whole darned box, for a couple of dollars. So far, he always takes the whole darned box back home. It's sort of like an albatross strapped around his neck. :?
