Forum rules

The following requirements must be followed when advertising personal antique radio / TV / audio / phono items (such as discussed in the forums here) for sale in the classifieds forum::

  • Titles must START with : FS (for sale) or WTB (want to buy) or Trade or Free at the beginning of the title..
  • FS posts must have an "asking" price and offers may be sent by PM. Are you parting something out? ... price each major part (not things like screws and nuts)
  • There must be a location somewhere in the ad or the members profile (City & State or Zip Code are the minimum requirement).
  • Ads are limited to two per day, and may not be bumped sooner than 7 days after the last post to the thread.
  • No outside sales links are allowed other than to pictures of actual items being sold. No links allowed to eBay, Craigslist etc.
  • This is NOT a discussion forum. If you're not buying or supplying or suggesting a relevant solution, don't post - send a Private Message. Comments on pricing will be deleted.
  • First to post to an item for sale stating "I WILL TAKE IT" it is first in line. Subsequent claims will be followed in the order they are posted. Claims to "Take it" can be conditional on unknowns such as shipping costs.
  • Any "PM sent" posts without posting a reason for the PM will be deleted as they are meaningless to anyone else reading the thread.
  • Once a deal is made, edit the title to say so and the thread will be locked

If your thread or post disappears - read the rules again - no warnings or explanations will be given when threads or posts are deleted.

Hi all,

Im looking to start on the Philco TV I picked up at the ETF in Hilliard.

I need a few tubes to get it going, some where missing some tested bad.

I need the following tubes;
6SN7 2x
12AU7
6AU6

Also the speaker cone is trashed so i think I am going to need a speaker.

The flyback looks good and at the ETF had a chance to test the 12JP4 which tested near 100% in emission/life test (thanks 7JP4-guy). It also looks like someone started recapping in the 70's.

Any help would be appreciated.

Matt

Checked my tube spares, you can have the following for the cost of shipping:

(4x) 6SN7
(2x) 12AU7
(2x) 6AU6

Thanks to some Antique Radio forum members and Just Radios, i have started work on the Philco TV.

The first thing was to clean up the chassis, then insert all tubes except the 5U4 rectifier tube so could power up without the HV. So i ran up the variac up slowly over like 45 min just to see if the tubes lit and the power trans did ok without heating up.

After that went ok i inserted the 5U4 and did a slow power up over an hour and a half and was rewarded with a raster.

After that and getting schematics and a service manual I ordered replacement caps form Just Radios, they did not have all the cap values i needed but i decided to place the order to get started.

The caps came in on Thursday and i decided to take time this long weekend to start recapping in stages, replace 5 then power up to make sure no harm was done.

I would like to thank 7JP4 guy for letting me use his spiffy picture tube tester at the ETF, Nick Williams and Pete Deskins for the tubes and Clif Benham for the Philco service manual PDF's

Philco did not use a 12JP4. That tube is a 12LP4.
I hope you plan on replacing the electrolytics.

Bill,

Yeah Caught that mistake after i posted, the electrolytics where replaced in the 70's. I will replace them, but for this portion they work fine, and do not run hot at all.

Hi all,

After replacing caps and making progress, resistors started going bad... Some i broke the leads off of when replacing other caps, the wire seems very fragile. Other caps started drifting badly the more the set was used. So Started replacing the larger higher power resistors first.

Now I am having issues with the horizontal locking in, it gets close but will just not make a nice straight picture without waving. I noticed that there are horizontal frequency and horizontal stability controls and wondered if I might start there.

Also I would love to take a scope to this thing and make sure my waveforms are correct, but there is a big problem and that is the CRT and yoke are mounted permanently in the cabinet, so if I take the chassis out I have nothing to connect it to...

Using a LaserDisc player as my source, have attached a picture of the effect. It is Jose Caracas singing.

Once the electronics are done I am not sure what to do about the photo finish which is badly marked in places.... but working order electronics are the order of the day first.

Your horizontal frequency is close, but not quite there.

Work through the horizontal sweep adjustment section in the Sams manual.

If still bad, check the resistors and mica capacitors around V16, the horizontal AFC/oscillator tube.

There are different solutions to the big-CRT-in-the-cabinet problem.

-- Some people get a small substitute CRT with its own yoke that you can plug into the chassis on the workbench.

-- You can also build extension cables for the CRT and yoke.

-- You can remove the CRT & yoke from the cabinet and carefully prop them on or near the chassis on the workbench.

RE: Horiz problem:
I had 2 sets I worked on and I replaced the micas with NOS micas, and it did not solve the problem.

I finally bought NEW epoxy coated micas and that solved the problems with both sets.

I would surmise that even though the NOS micas tested good, they were defective. I checked them both on an eye type cap checker and a Sencore LC 53. Both showed them good at full rated voltages and capacity, but they were not.
