Just to let you know that ups sucks the big one. Try to collect on damaged goods GOOD LUCK. All you get is the run around and they keep you on HOLD
Who initiated the call? The sender or the receiver? To be honest I have trouble remembering exactly how this works, as I've only made a couple claims shipping thousands of packages over a period of 15 years. But it seems the originator, who paid the insurance, is the one who needs to call. The receiver needs to keep the package and contents intact, taking pictures if requested or leaving it for an inspector to stop by and check it out.
I can think of three whole claims that I've actually made. One was a 66 Lincoln radio. Knob shafts were bent, the shop who received it was very argumentive -- to the point where they demanded a bunch of money -- much more than I originally made the claim for. Actually this was held up a short time, as they could not understand why a car AM radio would be worth more than say, ten dollars. I got on the phone and asked for the decision maker -- turned out to be a lady who needed an answer. I told her it was an original radio for a 66 Lincoln. Silence for a few seconds, said a check is on its way. Got the full amount.
Second, I forget the type of radio but the package was lost. UPS sent me a check to cover insurance, THEN they found the package. They couldn't understand why I didn't cash their check.
Third was trouble. UPS had no problem covering the claim, but I never got the check. I called and called but got nowhere. I wrote a letter to the regional office, I immediately got a bunch of phone calls from UPS employees falling overtop each other trying to help. Said they would get a check on the way. Didn't get it. Sent a SECOND letter, more apologies and more assurances. No check. Wrote a THIRD letter, basically this was a comedy of errors where everyone thought someone else was taking care of it. The third letter, it got done.
The other several thousand packages arrived safe and sound. UPS has instructions for packing and I follow them. RECEIVING radios is another matter; I just got another radio this week -- opened the box, another box. Opened it, third box. Opened the third, damaged. I had one once that was quadruple-boxed and was damaged. These guys thought they packed them well, but they did NOT follow instructions. Double-triple-quad packing doesn't do much if the INNER box isn't packed properly! Sheeeesh . . .
