I picked up an RCA Ortho that used to have the gold tapered legs. So far can't find any but Home Despot has a set of hardwood tapered legs 16" long. Anyone ever use these? How long were the originals? I saw a unit the guy had used the Home depot legs and painted them gold. They looked OK but not sure about their length. Any help appreciated

Ask Magicbrain (Charlie) he did this a radio once. I think he had to cut them down and replace the threaded bolts with proper size but it worked.
I have a spare set I offered up over in a thread on the classifieds but am getting zoinked with emails about them.

Hey Leland, Todd's right, I did use those generic tapered legs on my New Orthophonic 8-RF-13. Home Depot in my area didn't have anything like that at all. I got the legs from Lowe's....they were 24" and I had to cut them down. The studs that came with the legs were the exact right size for the radio, however, most New Ortho consolettes have a more narrow threaded stud, so you may have to replace them if they don't fit. Good news on your end is that I believe the original legs are 16" so you probably won't have to do any cutting at all. I chose to stain mine to match the radio, but if I ever do another one, I'll probably try the gold paint.

Thanks, The one from Waddell looks just right. I knew I could count on you guys. I am sorry I don't have more time to help out online, I have been in the Home electronic service business since 1955 and owned my own companies since 1963 until retirement. But I am still not retired as it turns out. I think I work harder now, that I have retired, than I did when I was "Working".

MagicBrain is correct about the NO consolettes having a different bolt size. I looked at similar Waddell legs at Lowe's and HD as well as on-line. The 16 inch Waddell legs have a 5/16-18 hanger bolt. My New Orthophonic players have a receptacle for a 1/4-20 bolt. You can replace the bolts or buy a longer leg (Waddell makes a 28" leg-#2528), cut it off and install the correct bolt. Instead, you could modify leg receptacle (top plate) hardware on the bottom of the player. To me, it looks easier and probably, mechanically stronger to add an external, angled mounting plate on the bottom of the player than to replace the internal receiver or modify the leg. http://www.acehardware.com/product/inde ... I think I will just replace the wood nut. I have been all over this forum and can't find the correct image size for an attachment so I will try a couple of 550 px wide and see if that works. Shown is the bottom of the unit with the angled brackets, the other side of the bracket and the nut I'll just replace to fit the screw. Seems the easiest way to go. I have already ordered the legs from Waddel, good thing I ordered now, they only have one left. OK, I tried to put in an attachment but can't find anything on the site so far that tells me how, so......signing off LEE

Not sure if the power output is the same, but the chassis looks identical. Lee, glad you got all the info you needed. It's great to be able to find those legs, they really are what makes the consolettes look so good, IMO. Pabilo, is that a black mink player I'm seeing on that leg receptacle pic? I'd love to see a pic of the whole thing....not too many of those around.

Magic Brain, I wish it was a black mink player. However, it is a 1959, early stereo model with a dark (mahogany) colored photo finish. Still, it looks and sounds pretty good.
Also, in reference to what Leland2 said about tips on how to post photos, etc. I have had some of the same problems. I am a newcomer to this forum and I can attach pictures (as long as they are less than 256k file size). I have not figured how you bring another member's quote into your post. Is there a "how to" section about posting that we are missing?

pabilo21 Eeeekk....I would definitely modify those cheap-o $5 legs before hacking on my 50 year old Hi-Fi
