You should rinse off the Spray Nine. It leaves a residue.

Rinse it off, blow it dry, and bake it. It will be squeaky clean.

Clear coat your brass with spray lacquer, like a semi-gloss or a gloss finish. Better yet, add your red lettering then seal it. It will be easier to fill in the red lettering first on a bare metal surface, then you can buff off the excess red so the letters are crisp. Then clear coat the whole bezel.

Carl, Mine is called the Early Version. Riders list them as U,W, S,T & Early. As soon as my reconed speaker come in, I'll be able to power it up again and report the results. I am going to try Brasso on the front plate and redo the red lettering.

Picked this up at a church auction for $35.00 awhile back. I found it to be a normal repair to get it playing solidly. If I could get er goin anyone can.

I got some Brasso today and got the front grille shiny. How do I fill in the red lettering before I spray some clear finnish on the grill?

Hoffies ... nice looking GE 805. Got any tips or anything peculiar when you did your recapping?
I'm going to order my Capacitors Monday. Going to stuff the Electrolytic Cans.

I found the best way was to get some cheap acrylic red paint at a hobby store.
Brush/smear the paint across the lettering.
Wait about a minute, then take a wet paper towel and wipe it off leaving the red paint down in the groves.

I made a slight boo boo. I did not get all the Brasso residue off my faceplate and the lacquer finish got a little blotchy. I'm debating on whether to live with it or strip it off again. Its not bad and I think will be OK once the knobs are on.

You might want to make sure the brass is clean of Brasso before you apply the red paint. Try cleaning the brass with lacquer thinner, then the red paint, then the clear lacquer spray.

Don't put th lacquer on heavy as it may run.

Success! I just finnished filing in the letters with red. Tomorrow, I'll shoot the grille with clear. Here is the result.

Looking good. Makes a big difference shinning up the brass.
I also noted that when I cleaned the gasket, it make a big difference in appearance.

I need to place my capacitor order so I can get this thing recapped.

My gasket seems to be in good shape, so I think I will leave it as is. My bakelite is very dull. I've been polishing on it with Novus off on on over the past week, but I can't seem to get it shiny like it should be.

John, good info, thanks. I think I am going to discern a replacement circuit for replacing Selenium Rectifiers in the GE 805 - simply a circuit with a resistor in series with the 1N4007 - and come up with a value for that Resistor that future restorers can reference. What I would like to see is resource documents on various TVs such as this and a recap capacitor order listing. Can you think of any thing else we can document that would be specific to a particular TV? Just pondering.

Hi Carl,
The cabinet and metal trim were perfect so just a polishing was instore. I changed the electrolitics and made a resistor change in the verticle output circuit to get a full raster. I kept all the rest factory and only turn it on once a month for 15 minutes.

Using my old Western-Electric Printed Circuit Board stand as a Chassis Stand to make recapping easier.


Once I get those huge 60uf and 150uf Electrolytics out of there, it should free up some room to work. Looks like some electronic hacking has been going on as there is a 30uf capacitor that is not in the Schematic. Got one electrolytic can stuffed but those 150uf capacitors are blocking me from the other can. Ordered Capacitors today and ready to get going.

The felt feet on the bottom - I only have 3 and the felt has outlived its life. Anyone know where they can be purchased? These are the round metal disks that you screw to the chassis through the Bakelite case and they have felt discs you insert in them.

Hoffies. Good show. The more I work on these TV's the more I like the way they look - I especially like it now that the dirt is gone and there is some shine on the cabinet. The GE 805 I purchased in March was the same one I saw in Sept 2011 at the Shelby Ham Fest. Same seller at both events. Guess nobody willing to make the purchase or invest the time it takes to restore it. I've done all the cosmetics - polished/lacquered the Brass, cleaned/polished the Bakelite, cleaned chassis, knobs, CRT Gasket, obtained a missing knob -- now the fun part -- Recapping!! I'd rather be holding a Soldering Iron than scrub pad:-)

Are you using Novus #2? Follow up with Novus #1 and buff it with a clean cloth. Some folks I've read use a wax - I've read that they use Pledge furniture wax and I've read some use car wax.

What I am doing iis starting with Novus 1 then finnishing with Novus 2. I'll check out Bandersen's video.

I sprayed the grille with clear today, so it's ready to be reinsalled.

I think that you are doing that backwards. Start with 2 and do the final finish with 1.

I don't recommend using Novus #1 on bakelite as it leaves a film on it and can make it cloudy. Lately, I've been using Meguiar's Cleaner Wax with good results. It was recommended by Nick D. in this thread: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=170021
