Hello,
Ad says $70 no speaker. Anyone know the model?
Regards.
David.

I can't believe your actually having to contemplate as to weather you should buy it or not. I would have bought it, for the measly $70, the moment I saw that ad.

Whoa Wow ...wouldn't think twice about buying it David. Looks like a Deforest Crosley crest on it below the dial.
Buy it

Looks like a rare model (at least I've never seen one like it), in
very nice condition! Speakers are not hard to come by. And
best of all, it doesn't take as much floor space as a console.
Even if it's not super rare, it's still worth 70 bux!
Nelson

Probably worth a few hundred even non-working, and way more than that fixed up. DO IT.

According to Lloyd Swackhammer's book "Radios of Canada" that is indeed a Deforest Crosley " Westminster ". A pictorial ad of it is in the book. Two versions one with an electric Hammond clock and the other with a spring wound.

Original price $109.50

Best

So giving in to peer pressure, you guys. I secured the item for $60. It is indeed a Westminster with a Hammond electric clock. The speaker is missing as is probably the output transformer. The 80 rect' is also absent.
The only data I have been able to dig up is a bare bones schematic in Nostalgair.
It would be nice to get more data as I did not want to have to calculate or guestimate the field coil resistance and all the Z numbers for the output stage. Can any one help with some info. I am hoping that Nelson in Winnipeg is right about speakers being easy to come by. Here are a couple of pics.

60 bucks was good . they did such a nice job with the design of top section of the cabinet then they gave up below that . Interesting ! I see an I.F. can at the back of the chassis that does not look original , its kinda hanging over the edge and 2 slots next to it . Looks like its been there forever though .

Yes Ken G,
Looks like you are right about that IF, the one on the right is correct. So I guess I will add that to the list of parts required.
Regards.
David.

You could probably gut the square can and put the innards under the circular can just above it.

Yep - you stole it - there are a couple different versions of that radio - one with a slightly different cabinet - the top isn't rounded - and one that has a short wave receiver built in . The IF can that is added is a 455khz. - the original is 175 khz I believe - I've had mine sitting here for a very long time because I can't find a good replacement IF - There is no room under the chassis to put one - most replacements are round or square and will jut out from the chassis - I have had numerous consoles and tombstones with the same IF cans in the chassis - and pretty much every one had bad IF's.
The speaker was also used on numerous radios - you might be able to pick up a speaker or donor radio at the next Ottawa club auction in May.
The way to deal with the IF is to rewind the original - so you'll have to find a donor chassis - the original coil is unusual - its a small coil - wound without a form - the secondary is wound directly on top of the primary - this small coil has its leads brought out and the coil is placed inside a small copper circular piece and is sealed in tar.
In spite of all that its a great radio to have - one of the few radios the wife doesn't object to. The original finish on some has fairly heavy tinting - which tends to hide the woodgrain - there is some really nice bookmatched veneer in the lower panel.

That IF transformer could be a replacement 175khz unit; you'll have to check the part number.

One trick which I have done, on a similar radio, is to use a 262 khz IF transformer (from a car radio) as a replacement, with capacitors across the primary and secondary windings to bring it down to 175 khz. It worked just fine!

One of the smaller transformers could be retrofitted into an original shield can, or mounted under the chassis.

The RCC schematic is on Nostalgia Air http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByMode ... 029185.pdf
Looking at the picture - I see 4 tubes - the 5th must be well hidden - from the layout diagram - the one in the lower right is supposed to be a 47 ?? -
David - there should be a chassis type number stamped into the rear of the chassis - that # can be cross referenced to obtain a better schematic - Dave at Just Radios may have factory originals.

Dear All,
Thanks for all the informative replies. I am going to open a new topic on this radio in the "electrical/mechanical restoration" section. I would like to reply to some of your statements and also ask a few more questions.
Regards.
David.
