Novus also streaks if you look at it in bright lights you will see a uneven shine. Great stuff though on plastic and catalin. I use Turtle Wax Polishing Compound & Scratch Remover.

Carl,

My speaker came back for my 805 yesterday. I installed it and fired the set up. Perfect sound but no raster. I checked volatges and all were ok. Finally traced it to a misadjusted ion trap which must have gotten bumped as I was cleaning the chasis. Today, I've got it hooked upto the cable, and it's playing good. I've got the restored grille mounted back on the cabinet front. I also bought some Meguires and went over the cabinet. Still a little more polishing to do on the main cabinet, but if all goes well, maybe I can get it back together in a few days.

Doug, good work. Post some pictures of you 805 playing. I'm still waiting for my capacitors to come in.

I too just waxed my case but used what I had - Excalibur car wax. Might try some Meguires too, Let me knowe how Meguires worked for you.

Here's 2 pics: One is a front view of it playing the 6:00 news, and the other is a side view.

I love seeing chassis's while these old TVs are playing.

Questions:
1- I'm curious, where did you get your speaker reconed? I'd like to know in case I need someone in the future.
2- When I removed my CRT, I had to loosen the front part of the chassis to extract my CRT. Did you have to do it that way too?

My speaker was done by Vintage Radios. email johnsvintageradio.com. 144N Bverwyck Rd #208, Lake Hiawatha NJ, 07034

I never took my CRT out. I just cleaned the best I could around it. However, leaving it in does make a pain for replacing some parts that are mouted on top of the chasis.

Doug,

Thanks for mentioning John's Vintage Radio for speaker reconing. That's a new source for that service that I was not familiar with. They have now been added to the handy-dandy ARF supplier list thread (http://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=179878) and the similar list at Radiomuseum (http://www.radiomuseum.org/forum/north_american_suppliers_for_vintage_electronics_28_nov_11.html?thread_id=271183).

I just put the front back on my set and am giving it another bench test. Carl, like you, mine needs feet. For the time being, I've just ordered some rubber feet like I would use on a metal cabinet set. If you find a source for an original type set of feet, please let me know. As you can see, I'm still missing some kobs, 4 in all.. I've got one set on the top left, and the other on the bottom right. As soon as the feet come in, I'll get it completely back in the cabinet.

I was able to find the small inner knob from a fellow ARFer.
Not entirely sure what it the correct assortment of knobs.
There are 4 knob sets where each set has an outer and an inner knob.
For my GE 805, I have 3 knob sets that are the same and the different
set is for the Channel Selector.

I have seen pictures where the the 2 bottom sets of knobs are alike and
the top 2 sets of knobs are the same.

In you picture, above, I have 3 knob sets like you have on the upper left control.
My channel selector is like the knob set you have on the lower right control.

Still, mine looks OK and I'm satisfied with the looks.

BTW, if you can't find knobs for your GE 805 here, try posting on Videokarma:
http://videokarma.org/forumdisplay.php?f=19
You should be able to find them from someone as a lot of these Bakelite cases have
been damaged beyond repair.

Doug, you may have already thought of this. Get some acrylic Antique White paint at a craft store like Ben Franklins ($1 or $2) and use it to put the white stenciling on the inner control knobs. Brush it on, wipe across the knob. I like the looks of Antique White rather than a bright white color. I've used this on more detailed lettering like my Radiola III battery radio. Makes a nice finishing touch.

Did the knobs come with white paint from the Factory?

Mine had remnants of white paint in the grove that I scraped off before re-applying new paint.

Carl,
I got my new feet in today. After giving it a couple of bench tests, it was time to put it back in the cabinet. I'm still not to happy with the cabinet, but I'll do some more polishing on it.
All I need now is to find the knobs that I am missing and find a spot in the house to display it. BTW, I just saw a model 800 on Ebay with a shiny cabinet.
Good luck with yours,
Doug

Doug, where did you find the feet?

Nice looking TV.
I like to see them playing like yours.
Still have not got my capacitors in for recap.

You did a great job on that GE 805.

Carl

These aren't original type feet. These are just generic rubber feet I bought on ebay just so it won't scratch whatever I decide to put the set on. Like you, I hope to find some original style feet.

Pretty good picture, but your yoke looks a little tilted. A simple adjustment on most sets.

Finished recapping my GE 805 Locomotive TV.
Now I understand why those terminal strips are a pain - and those terminals are easy to break off. Additionally, having Electrolytic Capacitors distributed over the chassis is weird. Can't think of a good reason for that.

I was replacing the Selenium Rectifiers with 1N4007's and traced the wiring. Apparently someone has hacked on this TV before me. I noted that one line of the AC was tack soldered to pin 3 of the 19BG6 tube -- that's the Cathode. Should have been connected to the Filament - Pin 2. I can understand the mistake as its a crowded area and there is a metal disk on the bottom of the 19BG6 hiding the notch so you can count the tube pins. There was some burn evidence probably due to this miss-wiring. When I got this TV, it had one Selenium and a burned silicon rectifier diode along with some burn evidence in the HV cage at the 19BG6.

I'm a little troubled wondering how much damage this TV got with the AC miss-wiring. Tired now from spending all day recapping and might revisit this in the morning.

Take a look at the Schematic of the AC rectifiers:

I dont' quite understand this power supply circuit. What is the purpose for the two 150uf capacitors in parallel and the rectifier pointed out by the red arrow? Looks like this TV has way too many Electrolytic capacitors.

My GE 805 is the "W" version. There is a different circuit for the "early version" that has two fewer 150uf capacitors.

Is this the "Thermal Cut Out" gizmo for the GE 850?

It looks more like some sort of circuit breaker.
It has a red button.
On my TV, its wired out of the circuit.

Carl, Yes, that red button is the thermal cut out. When I was reading your post about the miswiring, I was surprised that it didn't trip. Then I saw your next post where it had been bypassed. When I 1st got my set, I replaced a couple of electrolytics then tried a slow pwoer up with my variac. It kept repeadetly tripping until I got the rest of the electrolytics replaced in that line.
