I was talking to a guy and he was telling me that orange drop caps were only used for coupling. Is this true?

They have absolutely no added benefit over less obtrusive tubular axial or discs. All you do is spend more money for a clunky looking radial cap. Plus the common values are built in China.

The Xicon equivalents were pretty good, and a hell of a lot cheaper.

Its always been in China and is its own brand, not Mouser who now calls them Lelon. Not everything from China is bad but it does take constant monitoring. However they have dropped most axial electrolytics as they are becoming obsolete industry wide.

Guess I better stock up on some more axial caps wherever I can find them in usable values, then. At some point SMD caps will really dominate, try fixing a radio with one of those. Well you could easily hide it in most radios for appearance sake!

Xicon was based out of Texas and the manufacturing was out of the Far East. They had a very good rep. Not the rep of Nichicon and Panasonic, but good nonetheless. Lelon is not Xicon. And it appears that Lelon is on the crap caps list.
I have moved onto Nichicon and Panasonic.

When Mouser switched they put out an announcement that stated many mistakenly thought Xicon was their house brand and that they would rename them Lelon in order to allow Xicon to stand on their own. As far as I know Lelon is still a Xicon BUT I believe Xicon is/was either owned by Mouser or a former employee since they are both in Mansfield TX. With Mouser now part of Berkshire-Hathaway its likely that Xicon is on their own. Their former name was Transcap.
